Smackdown Limited On Using Profanity
WWE is shooting to pull in the key 18 to 49 demo, and the company is hoping a little colorful language will help in their efforts. It was reported that Vince Mcmahon had suggested more profanity and mature approach for the debut of NXT 2.0 and the idea was met with welcoming consideration from USA Higher-ups, but it looks like when it comes to the SmackDown Brand Execs at Fox don’t share the same thoughts on more swearing.
Ringside News is reporting that they are being told that NXT is “definitely” going to see more profanity, and so will Raw. SmackDown is not getting the same treatment.
We were told that SmackDown has “standards and practices” which prohibit WWE from going overboard with their colorful language. They can get away with some off-color jokes, like Roman Reigns’ quip about John Cena matches being like the “missionary position,” but they aren’t allowed to dive into any of George Carlin’s 7 Dirty Words.
We will have to see what each brand is able to get away with and will have to see if lacing profanity in their product makes any difference when it comes to the ratings.
