NWA Champion Brings Title To Brooklyn For First Time In 60 Years
Off of the news that Catalyst Wrestling had signed NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion Trevor Murdoch to headline their return to Brooklyn on January 15th at The Muse, Catalyst Wrestling officials were informed that they were making history for their international television taping.
Initially reported by WrestleRap’s Emilio Sparks, the event featuring not only Murdoch, but current ROH Pure Champion Josh Woods, former ROH World/Tag Team and NWA Tag Team Champion Homicide and second generation star and former Catalyst Champion Colby Corino, will be the first time in over 60 year that the Ten Pounds Of Gold touched down in Brooklyn.
Per author and historian Tim Hornbaker, who has written extensively about not only the National Wrestling Alliance, but the history of pro wrestling in New York City and former NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion, Buddy Rogers, the title’s history in the borough can be traced to as early as 1952, where then champion Lou Thesz defended the title, as well as a second defense in 1953.
The aforementioned Rogers, who took the crown from Pat O’Connor in June of 1961, made one of his earliest defenses of the title in Brooklyn just under two months later against trailblazing star Sweet Daddy Siki.
Rogers last known defense of the NWA Worlds Heavyweight title would come on October 2nd of that year, as he would face the man who’d take the World Wide Wrestling Federation Championship against him a year later inside Madison Square Garden, Bruno Sammartino.
Now taking that role as opponent will be Corino, son of a former NWA Champion himself and Wrecking Ball Legursky as they face Murdoch and Homicide in the headlining match sponsored by Culpepper Legal.
