Mercedes Martinez signs with AEW
Mercedes Martinez is All Elite.
The veteran of more than two decades returned to All Elite Wrestling at Wednesday’s New Year’s Smash event on December 29 at Daily’s Place in Jacksonville, FL, costing Thunder Rosa a TBS Championship tournament match against Jade Cargill.
Martinez last appeared in AEW at All Out in 2019, as part of the Casino Battle Royal on The Buy In. She also worked one match on AEW Dark, teaming with Big Swole.
Martinez made her pro debut in 2000, working the New England independents, and also spent time in CZW and IWA Mid South.
In 2005, Martinez worked the first show for SHIMMER Women Athletes, which would function as one of her main homes for nearly fifteen years. In SHIMMER, Martinez would wrestle a who’s who of women’s wrestling in the North American independents, including Sara Del Rey, Cheerleader Melissa, MsChief, Serena Deeb, Davina Rose (the future Bayley), Athena (the future Ember Moon), and dozens more.
Martinez made her WWE debut in July of 2017 as part of the inaugural Mae Young Classic, winning three matches before falling in the semifinals to tournament runner-up Shayna Baszler. She left shortly thereafter, and returned for the second Mae Young Classic in 2018, but again left shortly thereafter.
After her AEW appearance in 2019, Martinez returned to WWE, debuting on NXT in January of 2020. She remained in NXT until her release from the company in August of 2021.
Since then, she has appeared in Impact Wrestling, and a number of prominent North American independent promotions, but it appears she has found a new home promotion in AEW.
