WWE Trademarks Controversial Name
WWE has recently been filing for numerous amount’s of trademarks as they continue to build on the new NXT brand. One name, for an unspecified prospect’s ring name, doesn’t seem to have been entirely thought through.
The most recent filing is for “Gunther Stark,” according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office. The filing date was January 13, 2022.
“G & S: Entertainment services, namely, wrestling exhibitions and performances by a professional wrestler and entertainer rendered live and through broadcast media including television and radio, and via the internet or commercial online service; providing wrestling news and information via a global computer network; providing information in the fields of sports and entertainment via an online community portal; providing a website in the field of sports entertainment information; fan club services, namely, organizing sporting events in the field of wrestling for wrestling fan club members; organizing social entertainment events for entertainment purposes for wrestling fan club members; providing online newsletters in the fields of sports entertainment; online journals, namely blogs, in the field of sports entertainment.”
Filing for the Gunther Stark Trademark
After fans of the company found out about the filing, many took to google and found disturbing search results. The first result that comes up for Gunther Stark is that of a military commander from Nazi Germany. Günther Stark served as Kapitänleutnant for Adolf Hitler’s U-Boat command in the English Channel. Stark died when his vessel was sunk on June 8, 1944.
While it is incredibly unlikely that the company has intentionally named a new character after a Nazi, it goes without saying that WWE may need to do a little more research when coming up with names for upcoming stars. We will have to see if WWE will move forward with the name or scrap it altogether.
