Speculation Begins About Paige VanZant’s AEW Absence
Paige VanZant’s AEW debut may have to wait longer than expected.
Paige VanZant recently signed with AEW as a full time talent, signing her contract on live TV. She was originally pitched to team with Ethan Page vs Tay Conti and Sammy Guevara but those plans were scrapped in recent weeks as Scorpio Sky and Page appear to be moving on with a match with former tag partner Frankie Kazarian.
On the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer discussed why the match wouldn’t happen. He speculates that Paige VanZant simply isn’t ready for a match on a major pay-per-view and AEW might not want to risk making her look bad in the ring:
“The pay-per-view match was going to be Ethan Page and Paige VanZant vs. Conti and Sammy. But, they said that match was off and Paige VanZant wasn’t there. If the pay-per-view match was on, you would think that she would be there and her and Tay would be fighting again.
“Maybe they just feel that Paige isn’t ready for that. They got a tremendous reaction [with] VanZant and Tay Conti, so it’s not like the people don’t want to see it. But, they may just think that you know, she’s never had a match and you’re talking about AEW which is a pretty high standard of wrestling. You don’t want her to go out and have a clumsy match.”

Time will tell when VanZant will return to the ring following her AEW signing. Her debut match will be an interesting development when it finally happens.
