Dante Martin looks to continue his successful singles run.
Dante Martin has had a hard run in AEW. Originally signing with the company along with his brother Darius, unfortunately Darius has had terrible luck with injuries and is expected to be out for a lengthy period once again following a year off with an ACL tear. Dante Martin is scheduled to face Scorpio Sky for the TNT title on this weeks AEW Rampage.
On the latest Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer talked about the importance of the match. It was stressed that while it is highly unlikely that Dante will win the title, the key is making people believe that he could. Dante is expected to put on a show to try and further establish himself as a championship-caliber star.
“The big thing was is that they put over Dante’s potential, but basically Scorpio Sky said that he’s not in my league or at my level and Dante Martin said that he was going to prove that he, in fact, was. Pretty obviously, Scorpio Sky is probably not losing it to Dante, but the key for Dante is, is to have those matches where he really looks good in a losing effort and comes close, gets lots of near falls.”
“This is a match that… It has to be a good match or it doesn’t help Dante. It’s about helping Dante without winning and he needs to get lots and lots of offense and… The key to the match is if people believe he can win and to show off his cool stuff. So, it’s a big match. It’s like he’s on the way up and there’s certain things that you can do and certain things that you shouldn’t do when a babyface is on the way up.”

Of course, it is unlikely AEW will once again hot potato the AEW TNT championship, so Dante may not be in any position to be booked to win the belt at this time. However, a showcase performance vs Scorpio Sky could be exactly what Martin needs right now while he starts yet another singles run in the promotion.
