Tony Khan Addresses Why He Didn’t Strip CM Punk Of AEW World Title

It sounds like Dana White may be rubbing off on Tony Khan.

Last week on AEW Rampage, we saw CM Punk make his way to the ring, limping as he went. He got to the ring and it was obvious he was emotional as tears welled in his eyes. He would announce he would need surgery but Punk was not relinquishing the AEW World Title, despite Punk wanting to. Khan told Punk that he would not strip him of the title under any circumstances.

Speaking on Busted Open Radio, Tony Khan commented on his decision to go with an Interim AEW World Title.

“Based on what happens in real fights, in the world of fighting, this is what you do. You have a great champion, and if they are injured, you name an interim champion and set up an exciting unification fight. We have a great chance to set something exciting up,”

“It is a setback, but we’re really excited to get CM Punk back. He’s going to have surgery here quickly and I’m very nervous, but pretty optimistic because he’s going to be seeing one of the top doctors in the entire world and someone really renowned in sports medicine. We were fortunate to get him in quickly. We’re excited to get him back.”

Tony Khan took inspiration from the world of combat sports and clearly wants Punk to remain champion – at least until he can be defeated in the ring for the title.
