Nyla Rose Explains Why Her Gender Doesn’t Effect Her Wrestling Character

Nyla Rose is a lot of firsts in the pro wrestling industry.

A trailblazer for LGBT+ pro wrestlers, Nyla is a former AEW Women’s Champion becoming the first trans competitor to hold a world title in the US. Due to it being Pride month, Nyla has been featured more prominently on AEW’s social media pages as they celebrate Pride Month.

The Native Beast talked about keeping her gender separate from her character on a recent episode of “The Sessions with Renee Paquette.” Rose says while it is an important part of who she is, it has nothing to do with wrestling.

“The answer is very simple and I wish it was a little bit more in-depth for you, but I don’t win matches with my gender. It’s not important. I also feel like on a theatrical level, it’s not entertaining.”

“It’s important as a fact of who I am, but what I do in the ring, and the reason that I’m performing, the reason that I’m out there wrestling, it has no bearing on that whatsoever. So why make it a part of the character? It’s part of who I am, but not what I do.”

Of course, while her character may not be effected, there will always be critics of Nyla due to her identity as a trans athlete. Hopefully one day Nyla can proudly declare her gender without receiving hatred.
