An interim AEW World Champion was crowned tonight in the main event of AEW x NJPW: Forbidden Door
Originally a main event between CM Punk vs. Hiroshi Tanahashi for the AEW World Championship, Punk would suffer an injury, forcing them to pull out to have surgery. Tanahashi would go on to defeat Hirooki Goto at Dominion and Jon Moxley defeated Kyle O’Reily on Dynamite in the same night O’Reily won a battle royal thus creating Moxley vs Tanahashi for the interim AEW World Championship at Forbidden Door.
After a hard-hitting, back and forth battle between Moxley and Tanahashi, it would be a Death Rider followed by the winning pin for a blood coated Moxley to defeat Tanahashi and become the interim AEW World Champion.
The win would be followed up with the Jericho Appreciation Society attacking Moxley and Tanahashi, however it would be Eddie Kingston, Santana, Ortiz, Blackpool Combat Club’s Yuta and their new member Claudio Castagnoli who would save the new champion to end a night of great professional wrestling.
