Tony Khan spoke on the Forbidden Door Media Scrum tonight after the show.
We saw Claudio Castagnoli, the former Cesaro, debut in AEW tonight as Zack Sabre Jr’s mystery opponent. Tony was asked what the process was on bringing him in and how he feels about having him here. His answer is below:
I asked him about coming in actually before I knew for sure that Bryan was out, though I had a pretty good idea that Punk would be out, and I could tell there were going to be a lot of changes, we already have a lot of injured people, I had no idea we would have even more on the run up to the show, but, I just felt like, it was actually the day after the forum, so it would’ve been June 2nd, I called and I had interest, there was definitely mutual interest, but, at that point I felt like there was a good chance. I wasn’t sure if it would be here or at Death Before Dishonor, July 23rd on Pay-Per-View.[…] So I figured there was a chance that if Bryan made it back, that there was a good chance that probably he would’ve started at Death Before Dishonor and it would’ve been a great moment there, but I think that the crowd here, this is something very special and as long as Bryan is okay that’s the most important thing and I think he will be fine. It was great to have a good moment here at Forbidden Door, things worked out perfectly so I was very fortunate. I talked to Bryan on the phone last weekend […] So, he mentioned Claudio and it’s, I said it’s funny because I had Claudio under contract and I hadn’t told anybody, you’re the first person I mentioned it too, so, I think that’s going to work out real nice for all of us, and you’re going to be okay and he’s going to do great, so it worked out.
