13 Years Ago Today: UFC 100’s Blockbuster Event Went Down

Where were you 13 years ago today when UFC 100 went down?

The Michelob Ultra Arena, formerly known as the Mandalay Bay Events Center was the home for the blockbuster event that was UFC 100, this was the most bought UFC pay-per-view of all time with a buyrate of 1.6 million before it was broken at UFC 202 about 7 years later.

Tom Lawlor made sure to secure the submission of the night bonus with a 55 second guillotine win against C.B Dolloway. This would be the first and only submission bonus for Lawlor.

This event was the last time Jon Jones fought on the prelims, he defeated Jake O’Brien with a modified guillotine choke in the 2nd round.

Mark Coleman got his last UFC win here with a unanimous decision victory over Stephen Bonnar in the featured prelim before fighting Randy Couture at UFC 109 in the first UFC Hall of Famer vs. UFC Hall of Famer bout in UFC history at UFC 109.

Two opposing coaches from the Ultimate Fighter’s 9th season fought here to secure a championship bout vs. Anderson Silva. Team USA was represented by Dan Henderson who took on Team UK’s coach Michael Bisping. It would be Henderson who landed the knockout blow followed by the Hendo bomb to end it in the 2nd round. Bisping would get revenge later on at UFC 204 in 2016 by way of a unanimous decision win over Henderson to retain the UFC Middleweight championship.

The Fight of the Night for UFC 100 was between Middleweights Alan Belcher vs. the debuting Yoshihiro Akiyama who is a former K-1 Light Heavyweight Grand Prix finals winner. This was the debut of Akiyama and both men put on a back-and-forth contest to secure the “Fight of the Night” honors, both fighters earned a record-setting $100,000 bonus each.

The co-main event featured the legendary Georges St-Pierre who masterfully put on another one of his best performances over the dangerous Thiago Alves. GSP suffered a pulled groin muscle in the 4th round but prior to and after, it didn’t prevent the best from completing 10/12 takedowns while also landing 60 more strikes, 30 of them being more significant than Alves who showed potential standing and put in a resilient performance on the ground, continually getting back up.

Brock Lesnar signed with the promotion at UFC 77 in October of 2017, he fought in February at UFC 81 vs. Frank Mir. Despite The Beast scoring the first takedown and landing ground and pound, Mir secured a kneebar and forced a submission at 1:30 of the first round. The rematch would go down here in the main event of UFC 100, Lesnar was now the UFC Heavyweight champion after defeating Couture at UFC 91 where he won by TKO in the second round. Mir would defeat Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira by TKO at UFC 92 to be the interim Heavyweight champion The two rivals were the main event and Lesnar avoided the mistakes made in the 1st fight to secure the win in the 2nd fight in the second round by TKO (lots of ground and pound)

Since this event went down, here is how most fighters careers panned out.

Jim Miller who picked up a decision win over Mac Danzig recently defeated Donald Cerrone in a rematch to become the all-time leader for wins in UFC history.

Jon Jones is a former 2x Light Heavyweight champion, defending it successfully 11 times, he has still not lost by finish or decision. Jones continues to eye debuting in the heavyweight division to become a 2-division champion.

Both Dan Henderson and Michael Bisping were later on inducted in the UFC Hall of Fame, Henderson in 2011 and Bisping in 2019. Bisping is the first and currently only British UFC Champion.

Georges St-Pierre went on to win the Middleweight championship after taking a few years away from the sport off a dominant Welterweight title run. GSP would defeat Bisping at UFC 217 in the main event to secure a 2nd championship in another division.

Brock Lesnar returned to the world of WWE, however he would make his UFC return at UFC 200 to defeat Mark Hunt by unanimous decision before it was overturned due to Lesnar testing positive twice for clomiphene before he was suspended. Lesnar did attempt a UFC comeback vs. Daniel Cormier for the Heavyweight championship in 2018 but nothing came to fruition so Lesnar quietly retired from MMA.

Frank Mir fought for the champion two more times, both times being unsuccessful, he was inducted into the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame on July 24, 2016 at the Orleans Arena. Mir still holds the records for fastest submission in UFC history (45 seconds), first and only toe hold finish in UFC history, the second most fights in Heavyweight history with 27 and is still the leader with most wins by submission at Heavyweight.
