Social Media & Women’s Wrestling

The subject of women’s wrestling on social media is a very delicate to approach for different reasons, like stans and their takes to the always annoying stopwatch people. There’re also other problems like too, like fans not respecting the privacy of wrestlers, to tweeting hate towards them.

One particular part of the debate of women’s wrestling in the U.S. are the comparisons to of the AEW and WWE women’s divisions to one another on social media. The most interesting things is how the comparisons for both sides are sometimes unfair and don’t give credit when WWE or AEW do something positive for their women’s division.

This past weekend, I made a tweet talking about how SmackDown just had one match on SmackDown and barely being above 3-minutes. The responses to this tweet were interesting, from both sides of the debate; The WWE stans/Stopwatch people and the more calmed fans that agreed with my point.

Analyzing both sides of the debate, I found interesting points to analyze regarding women’s wrestling. The first one, is that AEW gets heat with stopwatch people regarding only booking one match for Dynamite and Rampage most weeks. But when trying to do the same criticism for WWE excuses aroused quickly. Yes, WWE had technically two women’s matches that day, but one was aired that and was just 3 minutes long. The same people that bash AEW for the same stuff were defensive of WWE for booking one match for 3 minutes.

The main point I tried to make, which didn’t translate to a lot of people was the same criticisms for AEW are not applied to WWE when they make the same mistakes and some more often than others. Both promotions have several problems with their divisions due to booking mismanagement or not taking opportunity. I guess what I’m trying to say, is that the criticisms to AEW and WWE about their women’s divisions should be the same.

AEW and its women’s division needs a lot of work, the main problem with the division is that it lacks a major established star- AEW is building talent, like Cargill or Baker as potential stars, but AEW needs a proven game-changer and there’s very few of those in women’s wrestling. Another problem is the booking, but this is not something new and has been talked about to death by me and many other pundits.

Women’s wrestling also facing hateful stuff. Wrestlers like Nyla Rose faces some terrible stuff on social media almost every day and with ignorant people tweeting hateful stuff. This is not exclusive to the U.S. but to other parts of the world as well.

Joshi (women’s wrestling in Japan) also has the same problems on the social media department like U.S. women’s wrestling. One of the most recent examples were fans for some reason spreading horrific tweets to Mina Shirakawa a few months ago. Joshi stans can be very hateful to certain joshis and to even to wrestlers outside of Japan. It’s a bizarre part of joshi wrestling.
