AEW’s Believed Policy Regarding Interim Championships In The Promotion

We have recently seen the interim title idea used in the women’s division in AEW as Thunder Rosa is currently on the shelf with a back injury. However, she would relinquish the title earlier this week, with Jamie Hayter being promoted to being the undisputed AEW Women’s World Champion.

The whole title picture surrounding Jon Moxley and CM Punk’s AEW World Title situation was also confusing. The AEW Women’s Championship picture was under more scrutiny, as Thunder Rosa was still the champion despite being out of action due to injury.

In the end, Thunder Rosa forfeited her title and Jamie Hayter was officially recognized as the AEW Women’s Champion. While speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer explained AEW’s mentality when it came to Interim Championships in the company.

With Punk, Punk was supposed to hold the title through that period, so that’s one of the reasons they did it that way. Because Moxley really wanted that championship reign, and he ended up getting another one because of what happened with Punk, but because of that you know they ended up Moxley getting an official reign, and then Punk was supposed to get an official reign back and everything like that. I think that’s kind of unofficially the mentality that if it’s a few months we’ll do the interim title, if it’s like 6 months, it’s too long.

We will have to wait and see whether the company will end up having more interim titles in the future or not.
