It was previously reported that WWE nixed plans for the Demon King’s return. He was supposed to have a Hell in a Cell match at the Royal Rumble, but that couldn’t happen. Edge couldn’t be around for the build, because he was filming that Percy Jackson Disney+ show.
Fightful Select has now reported that there was a lot more to that story.
Based on internal plans, not only was Edge vs. Finn Balor listed as a Hell in a Cell match for WWE Royal Rumble, but the Demon version of Finn Balor was slated to perform. Balor has used the persona seven times in WWE on the main roster, last appearing at WWE Extreme Rules in a loss to WWE Universal Champion Roman Reigns. It became a Summerslam staple for a few years, but has never been uncorked at a Royal Rumble.
Some that we spoke to felt as if the Demon persona didn’t fit during the current iteration of Judgment Day, and were against it in this situation. While others felt like that match would have needed the extra buzz of it returning.

We will have to see if and when the Demon King returns to WWE television. The Judgment Day seems to be doing fine and going strong. After all, Finn Balor’s current incarnation is doing his thing, but it’s nice to know that they have that option.
