Gunther Was Realistic About WWE Name Change
Back in January last year, many fans were concerned after it was revealed WWE copyrighted the name Gunther Stark, as it was related to someone who actually served on one of Hitler’s U-Boats.
That is what happened as WALTER’s name was changed to GUNTHER. That being said, more than a year after his name change – GUNTHER has become one of the most well-booked Superstars in the company.
While speaking on the recent The Ringer’s Cheap Heat podcast, GUNTHER mentioned that he would have preferred to keep the WALTER ring name, which is his real name, but understands why WWE did it. In fact, GUNTHER was very realistic about WWE changing his name.
“If you look at a wrestler’s career, a name change is nothing uncommon. That happens, so I was realistic about it. And for me, it was also clear it’s my real name, and WWE has, obviously, an interest to whoever they put on their television to put their original stamp on it.”

GUNTHER has become a beloved fixture on WWE Friday Night SmackDown, and his record-breaking reign as Intercontinental Champion has solidified his status as one of the company’s top stars.
It remains to be seen who will face off against GUNTHER at the Show of Shows, but fans are eagerly anticipating his WrestleMania 39 match.
