AEW: Collision Preview (6/24/2023)
Tonight’s episode of AEW: Collision takes place at tomorrow’s Forbidden Door venue, the Scotia Bank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Hot-blooded feuds, dream matches, promo segments, and tournament matches are on the menu for tonight, but hopefully not poutine because it looks gross. Sorry Canada and other people who are objectively wrong for liking it. Anyway, let’s get a look at the card, shall we?
Powerhouse Hobbs in action
The QTV stablemate is seeking to establish some dominance on his way forward, with Forbidden Door looming ominously. Who will step up to the Powerhouse?
Christian Cage addresses the TNT Title
When Luchasaurus won the TNT Championship off of Wardlow on the first episode of Collision, Christian Cage celebrated as though he won, holding aloft the gold that hopefully gets some respect soon. Whatever he has to say, it’s probably going to result in a lot of boos, but he’ll eat it up like it’s poutine because he’s Canadian and wrong.
We’ll hear from Miro
After a successful win over Tony Nese last week, the Bulgarian beast will speak. I imagine he’s got a lot to get off his chest, be it his absence, but I imagine he’ll ruffle enough feathers to cause someone out to initiate a feud with him or a NJPW talent to challenge him tomorrow. Either way, I know I’ll be entertained – Miro seems to cater to an old school vibe for me that is either badass or hilarious.
Sting and Darby Allin announce Forbidden Door partner
Chris Jericho has made a lot of enemies lately, and another is burgeoning from pupil and friend Sammy Guevara, but as the pair and Minoru Suzuki clash with Sting and Darby Allin at tomorrow’s crossover event, one question is on everyone’s mind: who is their partner? Speculation states it could either be Los Ingobernables de Japón‘s Tetsuya Naito, Shingo Takagi, or Hiromu Takahashi, while others think it could possibly be Goldberg. As Sting himself once said: “The only thing that’s for certain is that nothing is for certain.” Personally, I think it will be the guy who stole his AEW World Championship at a local Longhorn Steakhouse in Tallahassee Florida. Remember that? I sure do. I’ll never forget, Jericho. Never.
Brody King vs Andrade El Ídolo
The returning Andrade is white-hot following his victory over House of Black’s Buddy Matthews last week, but the attack by Matthews’s friends sees the former La Facción Ingobernable leader going head-to-head to the tank of the group in Brody King. This will place the Mexican in the throes of agony, but will he overcome? Maybe he needs some ungovernable friends to help him out.
Swerve Strickland vs Hiroshi Tanahashi
Casually dropped on us during a rundown for AEW: Dynamite this past week, AEW’s Swerve Strickland is set to lock up with the legendary Ace, Hiroshi Tanahashi ahead of his match with MJF at Forbidden Door. Strickland wrestles a different style and Tanahashi is easily adaptable and one of the best in NJPW’s history. To see a man who saved a company go against a bright young talent feels like something magical and we are getting it twice in one weekend for the second-biggest wrestling promotion in America. I’m excited for this.
Nyla Rose vs Willow Nightingale (The Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament Quarterfinal)
Two absolute forces are set to clash, two badass women are going to fight as the Blackheart’s legacy in wrestling continues. Nyla Rose needs this win to solidify her place in the company as she fights for television time, whilst Willow Nightingale has a lot of momentum on her side with the NJPW Strong Championship on her side. They feel they have a lot to lose and a lot to gain, and what’s more dangerous than someone who has something to prove?
CM Punk, FTR, and Ricky Starks vs Jay White, Juice Robinson and The Gunns
With Colten and Austin Gunn’s relationship to Jay White and Juice Robinson now in place, four of their latest targets seek to rectify their past grief as CM Punk, FTR, and Ricky Starks stand side-by-side. Jay White the chessmaster and Juice Robinson the wildcard are fresh in this scenario, but the Gunns recently gave guff to FTR throughout some of 2022 and 2023, so I expect that story to continue. This match also might serve a meta narrative, now that Punk is out of Chicago – will Canada boo the muffin man who doesn’t live on Drury Lane, or will they accept him back with open arms? Tune in to find out!
