IMPACT Wrestling Results & Review — August 17th, 2023
-KiLynn King vs Deonna Purrazzo
Purrazzo wins when she taps out KiLynn King with the Venus De Milo. Trinity can be seen watching the match on a monitor backstage.
My thoughts: This was an amazing match and yet another example of why IMPACT has the best women’s division in the business. King looked great even in defeat. Both women had some fantastic spots in this match, and it ended with King submitting to Deonna when she stretched both arms back in the Venus De Milo.
We go to the back with Kenny King talking to Gia about Swinger cashing in his title shot against King for his Digital Media Title at Emergence and Sheldon getting screwed by Heath earlier on the BTI pre show. King caused a distraction so that Jean could take advantage, but Heath attacked Jean from behind.
Elsewhere backstage, Santino Marella is talking with Kevin Knight. Santino tells Knight he’s like a panther. Bully Ray comes up and pulls Santino away to tell him that he needs to use his authority and do something about PCO; Bully is practically begging Santino when Myers and Moose walk up.
Myers says he wants Alex Shelley in a match. Moose calls Josh, Shelley, and Kushida cowards. Knight comes back up and says that he better not have heard him call Kushida a coward. Santino says tonight they’re going to have a match and tells Moose to get dressed. Myers says that could’ve been him and Shelley on the show. Shelley walks up and says “YUP.”
–Killer Kelly (w/Masha Slamovich) vs Savanna Evans (w/Gisele Shaw) Evans vs Jessicka (w/Courtney Rush)
Killer Kelly wins by hitting Evans with a DVD on top of Jessicka.
My thoughts: This match was a great preview for Emergence where MK Ultra will defend their Knockouts Tag Team Titles against Shaw and Evans, The Coven, and the Death Dollz. Kelly was physically the smallest of the three competitors, but all three women put on a good match.
We go to a Dirty Dango video where he had some choice words for Jake Something.
-Moose vs Kevin Knight
Moose hits a monster powrbomb and then yells out to Kushida. Moose nails Knight – Kushida’s NJPW tag team partner – with a HUGE SPEAR to pick up the victory.
My thoughts: This was great. Moose and Knight battling is something I didn’t know I needed, but now that I got it I need more. Incredible match. Knight was fantastic even though he lost. Moose sent a BIG message to Kushida with that one.
Gia is backstage with the Rascalz. Trey says everybody missed them and they’re going to be one step closer to the IMPACT Tag Team Titles after defeating Rich and Sami tonight. ABC interrupts the segment before Santino Marella steps in from both teams going after each other. Marella says if they want revenge on the Good Hands they can get it next week.
-Eric Young vs Big Kon.
Young wins when Deaner whacks Young in the back with a steel chair. Kon and Deaner win the numbers game and leave Eric Young laid out cold in the ring.
We go backstage to Yuya Uemura and Joe Hendry talking about potentially being tag team champions. A video hyping both of them plays, showing their friendship over the past few months.
In another area backstage, Tom Hannifan continues his interview from last week with Crazzy Steve. Steve talks about coming from a broken home, his parents, abuse he suffered. Steve says was always on the receiving end of physical violence before he put and end to it. Says he remembers exactly when he stopped taking the abuse.
Steve claims his mother never had a good day after he was born; she had cancer, kidney failure, depression, says they both did their best to look after each other. Steve says he always had the dream of wrestling for IMPACT.
Steve says he wasn’t happy, and it’s a shame his mother wasn’t here to see him sign and wrestle with IMPACT. Tom asks Steve why he’s there sharing all that. Steve says that’s exactly why they’re doing the interviews. To be continued…
Backstage, Chris Sabin is talking about Lio Rush and how he’s coming for Rush and that X Division title. Samuray Del Sol interrupts when he hears Lio Rush and says he came here to make an impact. Sabin says Rush isn’t around, but that they can wrestle if Del Sel really want to prove himself in IMPACT, he can wrestle Sabin next week.
-Bully Ray vs Black Taurus -No DQ
Bully wins after Taurus attempts a Twisting Senton Bomb off the top rope onto a ladder. Bully rolls off the ladder and Taurus hits it. Bully pins Taurus for the victory.
Ray is celebrating his victory in the ring when the lights go out. A figure appears at the top of the ramp. A moment later, the lights go on and PCO is standing behind Bully. Bully grabs PCO by the neck and chokeslams him through the table that was previously set up. PCO gets right back up after the chokeslam and chases Bully to the back.
We see a flashback to what happened with Frankie Kazarian and Alisha Edwards last week. Eddie Edwards is standing with Gia Miller talking about Alisha being a bad ass and said she’s OK. Frankie then comes up and says they should just bury the hatchet and move on. Eddie agrees that they should move on, but not until one last match. Frankie suggests they end it where they both started – Killer Kowalski’s wrestling school in Boston. Eddie agrees.
During the rundown of upcoming matches, Tom Hannifan breaks the news that Jake Something will be Sanada’s opponent at Emergence.
Tag Team Tournament
-Rich Swann & Sami Callihan vs ABC (Ace Austin & Chris Bey)
The Rascalz defeated Sami Callihan and Rich Swann when Callihan was setting Trey Miguel up for a Cactus Driver 97. Miguel dropped to the canvas and when Sami looked down, Miguel blasted him in the face with spray paint. The Rascalz double-teamed Callihan to pick up the victory.
My thoughts: Trey and Wentz took this victory in typical Rascalz fashion: cheat to win. There were some pretty good spots in this match, including when Sami Callihan hit Trey Miguel with a Cactus Driver 97 onto Zachary Wentz, who was laid out on the canvas. Wentz and Miguel got the better of both Callihan and Swann separately.
I’m predicting that ABC cost them the Tag Team Title match at Emergence after they interfered in the match at Slammiversary and led to ABC losing the titles.
Overall show thoughts: For a show that did NOT have some top stars (Josh Alexander, Trinity, Alex Shelley), this was a phenomenal show. It opened with the great knockouts match, flowed really well, kept building for multiple shows at the same time, and had a possible match of the year candidate with Moose and Kevin Knight. IMPACT is really clicking on all cylinders now, and I hope it continues. I thoroughly enjoyed the show, and have for awhile.
