Carmelo Hayes Explains Why Shawn Michaels Doesn’t Think He’s Ready For The WWE Main Roster
The current NXT Champion is one of the most charismatic superstars in all of WWE, proving that he is in fact “him.”
Hayes originally took the championship from the more physically imposing Bron Breakker, using his speed, agility and cunning to dethrone the behemoth of a champion.
Many wrestling fans believe that Hayes, like Breakker, is ready for the WWE main roster. However, as of this writing Hayes has only had one match on the main roster, facing off with Finn Balor on an episode of Monday Night RAW.
While speaking to The Messenger, Carmelo Hayes revealed that Shawn Michaels told him that he wasn’t ready for the main roster and explained why.
“He gave me a really good analogy. “‘I don’t want you to start building your roof when you haven’t laid the groundwork yet. You’re already trying to put in your windows and you haven’t even finished doing your thing.’ That’s where we’re at now.’
I was like, ‘Yeah, let me continue to build brick by brick by brick,’” Hayes added. “When I’m able to get to that point where it’s time to put a roof on this thing, I’ll go to the main roster and start building that roof.
[Michaels] hears the people talking,” Hayes acknowledged. “He knows what the fans want. Every time I’m in a match, it’s like, ‘If Melo loses, he’s getting called up.’ He just wants to assure me, ‘Hey, make sure you’re focusing on what’s in front of you.’”

Hayes is scheduled to defend his NXT Championship against Ilja Dragunov this weekend at NXT No Mercy.
We will have to wait and see if Hayes will once again be able to retain the NXT title.
