Mark Briscoe Talks About Being Winless In Continental Classic: “I Consider This My Rookie Season As A Singles Wrestler”

Mark Briscoe remains winless, with 0 points in the inaugural AEW Continental Classic.

Briscoe is part of the Gold League in the Continental Classic, with matches against Jon Moxley, Rush, Swerve Strickland, and Jay White. All of which, he came up short, losing every match to date. Although, he has long been eliminated from the tournament he attempted to play the role of spoiler, and has one more chance this week to pick up a win as he faces the also winless Jay Lethal.

Mark Briscoe was a guest on a recent virtual signing with K&S WrestleFest, during the signing Mark was asked about his string of losses thus far in the AEW Continental Classic. He explained that 22 years of his wrestling career was spent as a tag team wrestler alongside his late brother Jay Briscoe.

“I’ll tell you. I don’t mean to sound like I’m making the same excuse over and over, or sound like a broken record that happens to be making excuses, but I’ll put it in this perspective for you. I’ve been a tag team wrestler for 23 years, I mean from May 2000 up until December 2022. That was 22 years of tag team wrestling. Me and my brother, we left our mark on this business, on this sport. I’m not trying to toot my own horn or toot our own horn, but we’re the baddest team to ever do it. Nobody could get down like The Briscoes can get down in multiple situations in multiple different situations. There were some people that might be able to run with us in a technical, classical tag match. There might be some people that could run with us in a no DQ Deathmatch. There might be some people that could run with us in a ladder match. There might be some people that could run with us in any type of match that you could say, but there’s not one individual team that can do it all like The Briscoe Brothers can do it. The way we can get down, nobody ever got down like that before in professional wrestling history. So that’s 22 years.”

Mark Briscoe went on to expand on that statement, by saying that he sees his current run as his rookie season as a singles wrestler. He added that he isn’t making excuses, that he isn’t condoning losing, and that he isn’t happy with it; that even even though this is his rookie season, it isn’t okay that he lost.

Mark also noted that he has to figure out singles, the nuances of singles wrestling compared to tag team wrestling. He told everyone not to worry, and that he thinks in 2024 we will see big things.

“My first career, from 2000 to 2022, that’s tag team wrestling, made it all the way. I’m happy with what we accomplished in 22 years. But now here we are, 2023, going about to go into 2024. I consider this my rookie season as a singles wrestler. So as a rookie singles wrestler, I’m not trying to make excuses. I don’t condone losing. I’m not happy that I lost. Oh, it’s my rookie season so it’s okay that I lost. No, it’s not okay that I’m losing. But I’ve been losing these Continental Classic matches, I’ve been giving them hell every single match. But yeah, I just gotta figure out this singles, the nuances of singles wrestling as compared to tag team wrestling. Don’t worry, I think 2024, you’ll see big things from Sussex County’s favorite son.”
