WWE Raw Review: Intercontinental Title Number One Contender’s Gauntlet Match
WWE Raw
Toyota Center in Houston, Texas
They showed a shot outside Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as we are just 26 days away from WrestleMania. They showed a shot outside the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas. Michael Cole noted Raw was sold out. We saw Travis Scott arriving to WWE Raw with Jey Uso. We saw WWE Intercontinental Champion Gunther arriving earlier in the day.
Drew McIntyre & Seth Rollins Promo
Drew McIntyre came out to a strong heel reaction to start the show. McIntyre called Seth Rollins a junkie saying he could help but accept the WrestleMania Night One tag match. McIntyre said he put sense into Cody Rhodes by having him finishing the story by facing Roman Reigns. McIntyre said he dropped Rollins and it led to him saving the energy for his selfish agenda. Some members of the crowd began a light ‘what’ chant. McIntyre quickly shut them down saying ‘Say ‘what’ if you’re glad I took out CM Punk.” That was a great line. McIntyre said he always speaks the truth and has the answers. McIntyre asked what’s the bigger question. The crowd began chanting CM Punk. McIntyre said absolutely not. McIntyre said he expected a handwritten thank you from Punk because he’s keeping him relevant right now. McIntyre said the bigger picture is The Rock. The crowd booed. McIntyre spoke about the history of pro wrestling. McIntyre said it started at carnivals, then moved to armouries and to sold out arenas. McIntyre said he gets why Cody is upset with Rock for bringing up his family. McIntyre said Rollins thinks everything revolves around him and when he realizes that pro wresting is bigger than him. McIntyre said Rollins thinks he’s become a legend in his own mind. McIntyre said they have a future champion in McIntyre who we can be proud of.
WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins came out. Rollins told McIntyre to keep quiet. The crowd sang Rollins song. Rollins said McIntyre has been begging for his attention. Rollins said now that the WrestleMania Night One main event is in the bag. Rollins said he’s been thinking about the Claymore Kick. Rollins said McIntyre almost got all his attention. Rollins got his knees and dared him to hit him. Rollins turned his back as the crowd sang. McIntyre said before this gets any weirder he wanted to talk to Rollins. McIntyre said Rollins was right. McIntyre said Rollins was right he had to get over The Bloodline. McIntyre said it while mocking Rollins laugh. McIntyre said all Rollins he cares about is Rollins.
Rollins mentioned McIntyre is starting to remind him of someone. Rollins said he has lots of tattoos and is from Chicago. The crowd chanted CM Punk. Rollins said McIntyre is a bigger hypocrite than Punk. Rollins explained how McIntyre was upset with Bloodline costing him his biggest match. Rollins brought up how McIntyre needed Bloodline’s help to beat Cody and Jey Uso. Rollins said he and Cody will beat The Bloodline at WrestleMania Night One. Rollins said he will beat McIntyre at WrestleMania Night Two. Rollins said McIntyre will hear the crowd sing his song. McIntyre said Rollins was trying to provoke him to attack. McIntyre said Rollins can say nothing that will change his mind. McIntyre left the ring. Rollins said McIntyre is the least threat he’s worried about heading into WrestleMania. McIntyre teased entering the ring but stopped and left.
(Amin’s Thoughts) Rollins comeback about not being worried was an interesting line. Rollins being focused on the Bloodline story will cost him the World Heavyweight Title on WrestleMania Night Two. Rollins heel turn will start with him not holding a title, while seeing Cody Rhodes holding the Undisputed WWE Universal Title at WrestleMania. Drew McIntyre continues to be one of my favourite WWE characters to watch. McIntyre did a great job shifting the focus to the World Heavyweight Title. McIntyre seems to be having so much fun taking jabs at CM Punk when he gets a chance. I would like to see McIntyre win the World Heavyweight Title at WrestleMania. WWE already had a readymade program with Punk returning to challenge McIntyre for the World Heavyweight Title.
We saw Iyo Sky, Asuka, Kairi Sane & Dakota Kai arriving to the arena earlier in the day.
We saw Chad Gable highlight package ahead of the Gauntlet Match. Gable spoke about needing to win the gauntlet for his chance at redemption at Gunther. Gable said this match means more to him.
Becky Lynch def. Liv Morgan in 15:30. Becky Lynch got a big reaction. Liv got a solid reaction. Becky and Liv began exchanging shoulder tackle. Liv rocked Becky with combination kicks as they returned from break. Becky battled back sending Liv flying with a pair of Exploder Suplex. Becky rocked Liv with a flying forearm to the floor. Becky went for a dive but Liv caught her with a Codebreaker. Becky and Liv exchanged big strikes. Liv caught Becky with a springboard Codebreaker for two. They battled for position as Becky teased a German Suplex from the ring apron. Liv countered planting Becky with a Sunset Powerbomb from the ring apron to the floor. Liv rolled Becky into the ring for two. The crowd chanted “This Is Awesome!” Liv caught Becky with a Victory Roll for two. Becky caught Liv with a Manhandle Slam. Liv rolled out of the ring. Liv went for the Rings of Saturn which Becky reverses into an arm bar. This led to Becky and Liv exchanging rollups for near falls. Liv caught Becky with a Tornado DDT. Liv followed hitting the ObLIVion. Becky rolled to the floor. Liv slammed Becky on the mat. Becky caught Liv coming off the ropes with a Manhandle Slam for the win.
(Amin’s Thoughts) This was a very good action packed match. Liv wasn’t going to win but it was cool seeing her wrestle a strong competitive match with Becky’s who one of WWE biggest stars. A strong showing from Becky as she looked great in the win. Becky has been on a roll working really strong matches.
Becky Lynch / Rhea Ripley Promo
Becky gave Liv a nod of approval after the match. Liv rolled out of the ring. Becky stood on the turnbuckle. WWE Women’s World Champion Rhea Ripley came out to a big reaction. WWE official held Liv back. Liv gave Ripley some words. Ripley blew Liv a kiss. Ripley congratulated Becky on her win. The crowd chanted Mami. Ripley asked Becky if her win over Liv was worth it. Becky nodded. Ripley spoke about Becky getting into fights and leaving everything in the ring. Ripley said they are getting closer to WrestleMania. Ripley said Becky will fight anyone and anywhere. Ripley said Becky wants to prove she’s the best. Ripley said Becky knows she’s better than her. Ripley said Becky wants an excuse to why she lost. Ripley said if Becky doesn’t come into their match at 100 perfect. Ripley said Becky will no longer be walking out The Man. Ripley said Becky would be a disappointment.
Becky said before Royal Rumble she said Ripley was better. Becky said she had to prove Ripley is not better. Becky said she’s planted a seed and now it’s lead to roots and vines that have spread around the world. Becky said she is good when people believe in her. Becky said she’s great when people doubt her. Becky said if it has to be her against the whole world. Becky said the world doesn’t stand a chance. Becky dropped the mic. Becky’s music played as she left the ring.
(Amin’s Thoughts) Strong promos from both Becky and Ripley as they both look like top stars. Becky and Ripley feels like a really special WrestleMania match.
Raw General Manager Adam Pearce and Smackdown General Manager Nick Aldis announced Finn Balor and Damian Priest will defend the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Titles in a Six-Pack Ladder Match. Aldis and Pearce said teams will compete on both Raw and SmackDown to see who qualifies for the match.
(Amin’s Thoughts) I’m totally onboard with seeing a Ladder Match for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Titles at WrestleMania. WWE has a very talented tag team division and this gives more teams a chance to compete at WrestleMania for the titles. They could possibly do a finish where both a Raw and SmackDown team grabs a set of titles. This leads to the announcement of Raw and SmackDown getting their own sets of WWE Tag Team Titles for the brands.
We saw Finn Balor, Damian Priest and JD McDonagh in the Judgment Day clubhouse. They weren’t happy with the announcement. They left the clubhouse to speak with Pearce.
Candice LeRae & Indi Hartwell def. Maxxine Dupri & Ivy Nile in 2:00. Both teams were already inside the ring for the match. Nile caught Hartwell with a hook kick. The referee was distracted with Hartwell. LeRae took advantage kicking Nile in the back. LeRae tagged into the match. LeRae and Nile connected with double clothesline. Maxxine rocked Hartwell with a dropkick. Maxxine called for the caterpillar. LeRae stood in Maxxine’s way. LeRae told Maxxine people are booing her because no one cares. LeRae said she even wished Maxxine’s dead brother was here to see this. (That was going a bit too far.) Hartwell nailed Maxxine with a boot for the win.
(Amin’s Thoughts) I really don’t like it when any wrestling company brings up people who passed away in storyline TV angles. It just leaves a bad taste. The crowd wasn’t really sure what to make of this either when LeRae was shouting at Maxxine off mic. I’m interested to see where this storylines goes with Maxxine. It looks like they actually might be running with the clip of people booing Maxxine at WWE House Show into a storyline angle.
We saw Adam Pearce and Nick Aldis speaking backstage. Finn Balor, Damian Priest and JD McDonagh entered the office. Balor wasn’t happy defending the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Titles in a Six-Pack Challenge. Priest asked whose idea was this? Pearce brought up they got ideas from all kinds of places. Balor was upset because no one listens to his great ideas. Pearce said he got advice from Miz and R-Truth. Priest said he wanted a match. Peace said they are doing media. R-Truth appeared. Pearce told R-Truth he should be doing media with The Miz. R-Truth said it’s Monday. Pearce said it’s Monday. Priest was glad R-Truth was here. Priest told Pearce to make the match. Judgement Day left.

Cody said that person who now sits on the throne (Paul “Triple H” Levesque) is his closest working ally. Cody also spoke about teaming with Jey Uso. Cody said that WrestleMania match is his way to a fair shot at facing Reigns at WrestleMania.
Cody brought up a clip from last October 2023 of Cole asking his about being so close to finishing the story. Cody said he’s nervous and scared. Cody said the old head podcasters can’t believe he’s wearing suits and using big words. Cody said the story is no longer about him and Reigns. Cody said it’s about the fans who have followed him to the absolute end. Cody told a story about a blind fan who came to the show to feel the cheers, and another fan who underwent spinal fusion surgery and wanted nothing more than to get his weight belt.
Cody brought up his sister that Rock didn’t mention and his mother. Cody got emotional. Cody said he couldn’t hand the belt to Dusty Rhodes. Cody said he could hand it to his mother Michelle Rubio. Cody stood up and looked into the camera. Cody recalled Roman Reigns stating last year at WrestleMania they were in the third inning. Cody declared said they are in the last inning. Cody said Cole will get to say at WrestleMania that a Rhodes won the Undisputed WWE Universal Title. Cody said Cole will get to say Cody Rhodes finished the story. Cody shook Cole’s hand and hugged him. Cody left the ring and stood on the ring apron. Cody pointed at the WrestleMania sign.
(Amin’s Thoughts) A tremendous segment. Cole was great here asking Cody all the questions needed to make the interview feel like a big deal. An excellent emotional promo from Cody explaining why he wants to beat Roman Reigns and win the Undisputed WWE Universal Title at WrestleMania. This was also tremendous because Cody put all the focus on the match with Reigns and not the match with Rock. The next couple weeks with Cody is going to be filled with high drama leading into the WrestleMania match with Reigns.

Kai grabbed hold onto Baszler’s leg. Sane took advantage nailing Baszler with a spinning back fist. Asuka followed with a roundhouse kick. Asuka and Sane hit an InSane Elbow/Reverse DDT combo for the win to retain the titles.
(Amin’s Thoughts) A fun action packed tag team match with both teams getting the chance to shine. Seeing how Baszler and Stark have come along as a team has been fun to watch. A good showing from Asuka and Sane as their chemistry together is simply fantastic. The next challengers for Asuka and Sane for WrestleMania will come from SmackDown. Those challenges will be the babyface who help Bayley against Damage CTRL.
We saw Judgment Day in their clubhouse. Andrade entered Judgment Day’s clubhouse. Ripley told Andrade that Dominik isn’t here. Ripley said Dominik spoke highlight of Andrade. (Amin’s Thoughts) This was a fun match. It was fun seeing the crowd getting behind R-Truth as they really wanted to him get the win. A strong win and post-match attack to keep Judgment Day strong. I would like to see both DIY and Miz/R-Truth be part of the Six-Pack Ladder Match at WrestleMania for the Undisputed WWE Tag Team Titles.

(Amin’s Thoughts) This was a very good and fun Gauntlet Match to watch. There was lots of very good wrestling throughout all the matches. The closing moments between Gable and Sami was great stuff as they really built up the drama. I was fine with Sami winning as he and Gunther should have an awesome WrestleMania match. I also wanted to see Gable win because there’s a great story seeing Gable getting to share his WrestleMania moment with his daughter. I could still see Gable getting added to the WrestleMania match as his shoulder didn’t look like it was fully down on the three count. That could likely be done to get Gable into the WrestleMania with Gunther and Sami. Overall, this was a very good match.
OVERALL THOUGHTS
I had fun watching this episode of Raw There was a very good Gauntlet Match to set Gunther’s next challenger for the Intercontinental Title. I also enjoyed the Becky Lynch/Liv Morgan match as well. We got announcements for some new WrestleMania matches which is always a good thing. There were also some strong promos especially from Cody Rhodes and Drew McIntyre to build up their respective WrestleMania championship matches. Overall, a very good episode of Raw. A very focused show as we move closer on the Road to WrestleMania.
