WWE Releases Olympic Gold Medalist Gable Steveson From His Contract
Gable Steveson who was once thought of as someone who could be the next Kurt Angle is gone from WWE.
Dave Meltzer reported that Gable Steveson, a 2021 Olympic gold medalist in wrestling, was recently released from WWE. Steveson, at 23 years old, could have become one of the most accomplished heavyweight wrestlers in U.S. history. In 2020, he signed a notable NIL deal with WWE while still competing as an amateur wrestler, which included participation in the 2021 Olympics.
WWE then secured him on a multi-year contract, planning for him to pursue a second NCAA championship while making sporadic appearances on Raw and PPV shows. He was drafted to Raw in 2021, expected to debut at WrestleMania and join the main roster full-time after the college season ended.
During his time in college wrestling, Steveson won Big 10 and NCAA titles in 2022, marking his third consecutive undefeated season. He was named Big 10 athlete of the year and secured his second Hodge Trophy, along with a 2018 Junior Hodge Trophy. Following his NCAA tournament win at age 21, he retired from the sport.
