In the ever-evolving landscape of professional wrestling, few stories capture the imagination quite like that of Michael Oku. Known to fans as The OJMO, Oku’s journey from the British independent scene to the global stage is a testament to his talent, perseverance, and undeniable charisma. This exclusive look at Michael Oku’s career highlights his meteoric rise and his impact on the world of wrestling.

Humble Beginnings and Rapid Ascent

Michael Oku began his wrestling career in 2017, a period marked by a significant boom in British wrestling. Despite this, Oku’s entry into the sport was driven by personal passion rather than trends. He joined the Progress Wrestling School, quickly making a name for himself with his dedication and skill.

“I always dreamed of being a wrestler,” Oku recalls. “When I started training, it just felt like the right time in my life. The Progress Wrestling School was the perfect place to begin my journey, and within six months, I was debuting for Progress Wrestling. It was surreal and exciting to start in such a prestigious promotion so quickly.”

His rapid ascent continued in Revolution Pro Wrestling (RevPro), where he achieved the status of a Grand Slam champion and held multiple titles, including the longest reigning Cruiserweight Champion and the current Undisputed British Heavyweight Champion.

“RevPro was where I really found my footing,” Oku explains. “From my first match, I kept getting bigger opportunities and made the most of each one. My journey with RevPro was marked by continuous opportunities. My very first match was after loads of brewing, and I was asked to be essentially squashed by the Great O’Khan. I did my best job, and from there, I kept getting bigger opportunities. Each match was a stepping stone, leading to the next, and before I knew it, I was holding multiple titles and being recognized as a Grand Slam champion.”

Breaking International Boundaries

Oku’s talent soon caught the attention of international promotions. His performances in Mexico’s CMLL and Japan’s New Japan Pro Wrestling showcased his ability to compete on a global scale. Wrestling in iconic venues like Arena Mexico and teaming with legends such as Hiroshi Tanahashi and Eddie Kingston at events like Royal Quest II were pivotal moments in his career.

“Wrestling in front of 16,000 people at Arena Mexico was surreal,” Oku says. “It felt amazing to be part of such a historic event and represent British wrestling on an international stage. My time in CMLL saw me face some of the biggest names in Mexican wrestling, including Volador Jr. and Ultimo Guerrero. The experience not only expanded my wrestling repertoire but also solidified my status as a versatile and formidable competitor. CMLL treated me incredibly well, and wrestling in Mexico taught me so much about different styles and approaches to the sport.”

Overcoming Challenges and Embracing Triumphs

Oku’s journey has not been without its hurdles. From the competitive independent circuit to physical and mental challenges, he has faced and overcome numerous obstacles. High-profile matches against top-tier talent like Will Ospreay and Trent Seven have not only been challenging but also rewarding, pushing him to new heights.

“Facing Will Ospreay was nerve-wracking but incredibly rewarding,” Oku reflects. “That match opened many doors for me and helped me grow as a wrestler. Will is an exceptional talent, and stepping into the ring with him pushed me to elevate my game. The acclaim the match received was overwhelming, and it was a significant milestone in my career. Each challenge and each opponent have taught me valuable lessons, helping me evolve and improve as a wrestler.”

PWG and Battle of Los Angeles

Oku’s reputation continued to grow, leading to an invitation to participate in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla’s (PWG) prestigious Battle of Los Angeles (BOLA) tournament. Competing in PWG, known for its high-caliber matches and intense atmosphere, was a significant milestone in his career.

“Getting the call for BOLA was a dream come true,” Oku shares. “PWG has a reputation for showcasing the best talent in the world, and to be part of that was an honor. The experience at BOLA was incredible. Wrestling in front of such an enthusiastic crowd and against top-tier talent was unforgettable. My first match in the tournament was one of my favorites of 2023, and the entire event helped me grow and expand my fanbase globally.”
