Ronda Rousey: Ask Me Anything; Literally Everybody: Sandy Hook?

The views expressed in this or any other editorial are solely those of the writer and do not necessarily represent the views, thoughts, feelings, or sense of humor as any Bodyslam.net staff.

Who could have seen this coming? Besides everybody?

Former UFC fighter and WWE wrestler Ronda Rousey recently took to Reddit to hold an AMA session with her fans — or, at least, who she hoped were her fans — to promote her new graphic novel, Expecting the Unexpected.

It went about the way you’d expect.

Unfortunately, Rousey, nor anybody on her marketing team, considered the fact that, uhm, there are lots of people that don’t like her. And they have access to the internet.

That dislike could stem from a variety of subjects but it seems, based on the Reddit comments, that most people wanted to discuss a very specific topic — one that Rousey has now been linked to since it happened.

On Dec. 14, 2012, a tragic school shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, reportedly left six staff members and 20 children dead. It was one of the most tragic school shootings in the history of the country.

For some reason, however, instead of simply mourning the tragedy and offering condolences or, better yet, simply saying nothing at all, certain people like Alex Jones and Ronda Rousey opted to theorize about the events that took place that day at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

In a since-deleted tweet, Rousey shared a 30 minute video that highlighted a conspiracy theory that the Sandy Hook massacre which, again, left 20 children and six adults dead, was staged.

“Extremely Interesting,” Rousey tweeted about the video. “Must-watch.”

Naturally, when people replied, they were not fans. When confronted with her stance, she doubled-down and said that “asking questions and doing research is more patriotic than blindly accepting what you’re told.”

Because, when it comes to dead children, it’s important to be patriotic.

Rousey may have forgotten about her comments, but the rest of the world has not. So, on Tuesday, when she held a Reddit AMA, most of the commenters only wanted to ask her about one thing.

Needless to say, the AMA was DOA.

And so on. There was more. Oh so much more. But, to summarize, most Reddit users, if there was a chance that Rousey would see their question, wanted to know 1) Why Ronda Rousey believed what she believed about Sandy Hook 2) Why she thought it was a good idea to talk about what she believed about Sandy Hook and 3) Why, after Alex Jones lost his fortune because of similar Sandy Hook denials, she hasn’t ever addressed, nor apologized for her comments…even ten years later.

Most people, in general, are willing to forgive (if not completely forget). We’ve all said dumb things. We’ve all done dumb things. I mean, most of us haven’t denied the senseless and tragic murder of 20 children, but still. If Ronda Rousey were to ever say something like, “Whoa, yeah. That was really dumb. I was misinformed. I shouldn’t have said anything. I’m sorry,” the majority of the public would probably forgive her.

Instead, it seems as though she will continue to ignore the comments she made all those years ago. And, because of that, Reddit wrestling fans will continue to confront her about said comments. It’s unclear why she thought going onto an open forum, especially one as wild-west as Reddit, would be a good idea.

She probably should have expected the unexpected. But like, the response was very much expected.
