Nigel McGuiness Wants To End His Wrestling In-Ring Career By His Own Terms

Lee South Willie Mack vs Konosuke Takeshita Los Angeles, CA ROH Supercars of Honor March 3, 2023

Nigel McGuinness reflects on the possibility of concluding his wrestling career on his own terms after injuries led to his retirement from in-ring competition in 2011. Transitioning to a commentary role, McGuinness had a stint with WWE before joining AEW in 2023.

In a candid conversation on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, McGuinness discussed the idea of ending his wrestling career under more favorable circumstances. Recalling the unexpected nature of his final match in a small venue in West Virginia, McGuinness expressed gratitude for the independent promoters who facilitated his retirement tour, acknowledging that endings in wrestling are often unpredictable.

When asked about a potential matchup against Bryan Danielson at Wembley Stadium as the sole condition for a comeback, McGuinness acknowledged the significance of their history but emphasized his commitment to his commentary role and reluctance to return to full-time wrestling. While acknowledging the talent and influence of veterans like Christian Cage and Adam Copeland, McGuinness underscored his belief in passing on knowledge to the next generation through his commentary work, expressing that he has no desire to pursue a wrestling career beyond a potential match against Danielson. McGuinness clarified that his interest in returning to the ring hinges solely on facing Danielson, citing their shared history and storyline as the motivating factor.

Nigel McGuinness had a successful wrestling career that was unfortunately cut short due to injury. After starting in the independent circuit, he gained recognition for his technical wrestling skills and captivating in-ring performances. McGuinness is best known for his ROH career of which he is considered one of the brand’s most memorable legends, winning the ROH Pure Championship and ROH World Championship. He later transitioned to TNA and had memorable feuds and matches before retiring from in-ring competition in 2011. Despite his career being cut short, McGuinness made a lasting impact on the wrestling industry and continues to contribute as a commentator and mentor in the wrestling world.
