Michael Chandler: I Was Completely Fine With Five Rounds. I Like Five Rounds

Iron Mike and Do Brox clash for 5 rounds.

UFC 309 Co-Main Event

Michael Chandler and Charles Oliveira fought back in 2021 for the Lightweight Gold in a five round affair. Despite the bout only last two rings, it was scheduled for five. Now, the rematch at UFC 309 this Saturday is not for many championship, but the rounds will remain the same. A rarity for a non-title non-main event.

Now, Michael Chandler was asked his thoughts on the rematch being five rounds on the Ariel Helwani Show. Chandler revealed that despite no championship being up for grabs, he does like five round fights.

I think we talked about it, I was completely fine with five rounds. I like five rounds, I like five rounds against Charles, I like five rounds. I like training for five rounds, I like the extra work, I like the stakes being highland it’s, you know, this is one of the biggest fights of the entire year when it comes to the lightweight division, for sure. Charles who believes that he’s going to be champion again, I believe I’m going to be champion again, co-main event number one contender fight, makes a lot of sense for it to be five rounds because one of us is going to fight five rounds next, for sure. And I believe it’s going to be me. So, I was cool with five rounds and I wanted five rounds.

Though UFC want officially said it’s a number one contender fight, the winner of the bout will be ranked #3 in the lightweight division. We’ll see who gets closer to the gold this Saturday at Madison Square Garden.
