Jon Jones Reveals What He Was Told About The Old Gloves Returning At UFC 309
The old gloves are back.
UFC 309 Glove Debacle
It was announced earlier this week that the new gloves UFC has been using for almost the entire year, will not be used this weekend at UFC 309. Many fans questioned why this was the case, as no reason was given.
Now, UFC 309 headliner, Jon Jones, was asked about the old glove situation at his media day interview. Jones said he hated the new gloves and the UFC’s Hunter Campbell called him and said that they’re reverting to the old style for the veterans on the card.
I’m really excited about the old gloves. I got sent a pair of the new gloves several weeks ago. I tried them on, and I thought they were tight. Unused to fit in an XL, and in the new gloves, I had to put on a 3XL. The shape curving your hands like that, they’re very uncomfortable for me and I was actually really stressed thinking about how am I going to go into fight week wearing these gloves that I don’t even want to train in. So, when I got a phone call recently, Hunter said “everyone on this card are veterans, why put a bunch of vets in a new glove, lets give you guys all what you’re used to.” It was a major relief to my coach Brandon, who wraps my hands, it was a major relief to me, as well.
New gloves or not, Jon Jones will fight Stipe Miocic this Saturday at UFC 309 in Madison Square Garden. You can see the full card for UFC 309 here.
