EXCLUSIVE: “Leading The Pack: An Interview With BOZILLA”

If you haven’t had a chance to watch Bozilla wrestle, you are truly missing out. Bozilla made her debut in 2022, but her career really took off after being announced as one of the few foreign competitors in Rossy Ogawa’s new promotion: Dream Star Fighting Marigold. Bozilla stood out among the other talents. When the inaugural show’s card was revealed, it was evident that Marigold had big plans for Bozilla. In that match, she demonstrated that, despite having a shorter resume than stars like Giulia, Sareee, or Utami Hayashishita, she could hold her own against them in the ring. Her dominance was shown immediately. At just 21 years old, she has met and even surpassed all expectations by fans. I was very happy to be able to chat with her about her career so far; and looking toward the future.

I wanted to start this interview by asking what you’d like the first impression of you from new fans to be? If someone’s never seen Bozilla wrestle, what do you want to tell them?

I have to say, if you never saw the mighty Bozilla in the ring you messed up. I’m a different breed of a wrestler. Something that has been forgotten in wrestling! I’m here in Japan to bring back a lost art: Dominating my opponents! Tossing them around and paving my way to total domination. Everybody is trying to get fancy moves in but when I’m in the ring it’s just a fight. Wrestling is a fight and all the little cookie cutters stepping into another world when they face me. They are afraid and scared but I’m not!!! Hit me and I hit you back harder, kick me and I kick back even stronger! I’m born for this and time will tell where the story ends. But at the moment I’m here on a mission. White belt? I don’t care anymore and my match against Miku at Summer Destiny woke me up and unleashed a new force in Bozilla. Maybe Sareee beat me this time but I’m still coming for the red belt and I don’t care who has it!! Fact. I want to be at the top of the food chain. So coming back to your question. Bozilla is something you never saw and you’ll never forget!!!!

How does it feel to see your popularity increase, not only in Japan, but the world? Do you ever get a moment to really absorb how much the fans adore you? You were very active after your debut, and that resonated really well with fans. Do you actively look to social media for feedback or advice?

I don’t care because it would take away from my focus. It is great to see my army of Bozillians growing every day and that shows me that I’m doing something right. The fact is that I’m built different and act different in the ring and people appreciate that. I cannot follow everything that is on the net but Japan has a high standard for wrestling and the fact that I’m dominating the Marigold roster at 21 years old just shows everybody that my future will be bright. The rest of the world is also taking notice of that and the sky will be the limit. There are a lot of comments about my matches and my presence but I don’t take advice from that . Feedback is also good but I don’t put my focus on that because I don’t want to lose my track by getting disturbed.

Do you have an all time favorite match you like to watch, or have taken a lot of inspiration from?

I watched a lot of old stuff like Stan Hansen and Vader as well as old Terry funk stuff! Everything from the old AJPW Aera is awesome as well as matches from the original ECW. I also watched all my dads old matches.

My favorite Matches from of myself are definitely the ones with Nanae Takahashi (both from the Korakuen Hall), Sareee (World Title Match and DS Grand Prix Final), Miku (Summer Destiny PPV and DS Grand Prix) and of course my first ever Match in Japan  (Marigold Fields Forever).

You did an interview for Wrestlepurists back in June, with a good friend of mine, Peps. In that he asked you about your transition to Japan and how long you planned on staying there. I wanted to follow up there and ask if anything has changed since then, now that you have a lot more matches there under your belt. Is the plan to stay in Japan as long as you can?

Are you asking me if anything has changed after the last months? Hell no!

I still have unfinished business in Japan and there are still goals for Bozilla. The Style in Japan is awesome and very physical so that it is very rough on your body but there is a saying I have:

Pussies don’t make it!

The appreciation from the fans is great and they are really into the matches. That helps also to push me to another level. I want to be recognized as a big player in the Joshi World and have people talking about Bozilla in the future. Nobody knows where the journey goes and where the story ends! I’m wide open and time will tell.

What other wrestlers from Europe do you think would do well wrestling in Japan?

There is definitely one that comes to my mind and that’s Alex Windsor! She‘s absolutely incredible and talented. Plus she’s already been in Japan. Dani Luna, Lizzy Evo would also come to my mind. Outside of them I don’t follow the European scene a lot.

Who do you think has been your best rival in the company so far? My pick is Nanae Takahashi, as she seems to have your number a bit!

When it comes to rivals you are right about Nanae. She is a very experienced wrestler that has seen everything in this business and in both our matches we went to war!

Sareee is definitely one of my best rivals. She is one of the best in the world and proves every time in the ring why she is! Who knows, maybe we will team up again or we’ll face each other again in a single match!

Fact is that when the score is settled I will be the one on top.

If you could face any joshi in history, what would be your first choice?

From the old days there would be Chigusa Nagayo, Bull Nakano, Jaguar Yokota, Jackie Sato, and Manami Toyota!

From the present:

Giulia (You never know what happen and where our path are crossing again) and Utami

The main thing for Bozilla is that I don’t care who I’m facing because I’m a hungry predator in a juicy environment!

Have you been able to study any other joshi monsters from the past? Dave Meltzer compared you to Monster Ripper, so I was wondering if you heard that compliment from him and if you have seen Monster Ripper’s work.

Oh yeah, the Monster Ripper comparison!

Dave Meltzer is a great historian especially for Joshi Wrestling and the history of Japanese Female wrestling. He knows this field and it makes me proud that this came from a very important person in the Wrestling community/business. It shows me that I’m doing something right and I will stick with my intention to get my own brand established.

So Mr. Meltzer thank you for that!! Don’t forget I’m just 21 years old and I plan to stay a long time in this business. Bozilla is still Bozilla which combines new and old Style. I’m different from anybody!

You mentioned her previously; but Giulia finally made her long anticipated debut in WWE, to much praise. She’s taken to the transition really well, and American fans seem very happy with her performance so far. How has the Marigold locker room felt since she left? Is there a sense of everyone wanting to step up to fill the giant shoes she left?

I don’t care who will take the lead in the locker room, what would it even mean to me? Nothing! They are already afraid of me and that is enough! There are no extra benefits if anyone else takes the lead! So let them find out who will take over that position. I focus on my matches not on positions.

Following that I wanted to ask you your thoughts on her initial debut, and presentation so far in WWE.

Sure I watched Giulias debut and how the new audience reacted to her. It was as I expected. She came and conquered. Giulia is in my league by having an aura that is hard to not like. Her style will shock a lot of people and I really hope to face her again somewhere.

Regardless of wrestling in Japan, you’ve stated your intent of wanting to go to WWE eventually. I did notice you have booking contact information on your socials. Are you interested in wrestling in the United States intendent scene? Should indie companies be contacting you and booking you to work in the United States?

I actively want to wrestle everywhere and that’s my mission!

If you want to book me do that through my Instagram! If you don’t ask you don’t get an answer. It‘s that simple! You have an opponent that has the guts to face Bozilla? bring it on!

Lots of wrestlers from Japan have wrestled in the indies, like Utami previously wrestling for GCW. Is there anyone on the independent scene you have an interest in working with?

As I said before: I don’t fear anybody and if promotions want to get the experience to have me on the card!  So, hell yeah, I‘m absolutely open for it! I definitely would like to wrestle against Jordynne Grace, Gisele Shaw, Alex Windsor and some other ones.

The fact is I’m on a mission to show everybody that I’m the number one and if anybody doubts that contact me!

You’ve named wrestlers like Rhea and Jade Cargill as people you’d like to face whenever you eventually make it to WWE. Have you always watched WWE? If so, who were your favorites growing up?
I watched a lot of wrestling. (Original ECW, WWE and old European Wrestling tapes because of the fact that wrestling is a big part of my family).  I liked watching Fit Finlay, Stone Cold, The Rock, John Cena, Triple H, Chyna, Saraya (aka Paige) but I never tried to copy anybody because I worked on building my own character.

Rounding this all out, I had a final question! When you look at the growth of Joshi in the US, and specifically the start of Marigold. What is a final message you want to share with people in America who have never given not only Joshi, but any international wrestling a chance? Whether that’d be in Japan, Germany, or anywhere?

It is amazing that Joshi got a strong following in the US but also in Europe and especially Marigold! Ogawa san is great in promoting and in keeping it interesting for the viewers. It’s a different product than the typical US wrestling show. It is much rougher and harder and that‘s why they call it Strong Style. Trust me, it is not for everyone and a lot of my opponents are tough but I’m the toughest of the whole bunch.

Joshi wrestling is growing as we speak and there is a lot in front of us! Next year we will have a show in Las Vegas during Mania weekend.I hope that we will also go to Europe to show everyone what Joshi Wrestling and Strong Style is all about.

The only clear thing is that Bozilla will be leading the pack!

Thanks so much to Bozilla and Marigold for working with me on this interview. If you haven’t gotten a chance to watch her, I really hope this interview has been able to entice you to do so. Bozilla has something special to her. She is at the beginning part of her career and shown already just how good she is in the ring. She also shown how much she loves wrestling. The future is bright.
