AEW Continental Classic 2024 Analysis and Post Match Results – Round 1, Week 1

The Continental Classic has made its triumphant return this year as we welcome back returning participants as well as newcomers into the fold.

The round-robin tournament has a total of 12 participants, split into 2 groups of 6 in their own separate leagues, the Gold League and Blue League, respectively.

Here’s how the rules fare out, as well as how points are calculated within each tournament match:

20 Minute Time Limit
Win (Pinfall or Submission): 3 Points
Loss (Pinned or Submitted): 0 Points
Time Limit Draw: 1 Point
Everyone is banned from ringside during the duration of the tournament.

I will be posting the results of the tournament weekly, as the matches take place in both AEW Dynamite, AEW Collision, and AEW Rampage.

To make things a little less difficult and easier to follow along, I came up with a table of continents of abbreviations that will be used through the duration of the result posting.

[NEW] – New participant for the tournament.

[××× C2] – a returning participant

[W/PF] – win by pinfall

[L/PF] – lose by pinfall

[W/SUB] – win by submission

[L/SUB] – loss by submission

[TMD] – time limit draw

[LY] – last year’s tournament points received (if a returning participant)

[LYBF] – last year by faction***
***This was to only be applied to Juice Robinson this year, as Jay White competed in the tournament last year and will compare his point total to Juice’s point total, since they are both representing the Bang Bang Gang/Bullet Club Gold. However, after his match versus Will Ospreay on 11/30, it was reported by Fightful that Juice Robinson sustained a broken fibula and would no longer compete in the Continental Classic. It was later reported by Tony Khan that Komander will be his replacement in the tournament, and therefore his name will be in parentheses next to Juice Robinson in this analysis only, as Juice’s W/L record in the tournament will be replicated for the remainder of it by Komander.

And now, here are the results of Round 1, Nights 1 and 2 of the Continental Classic Tournament matches on 11/27 (Dynamite) and 11/30 (Collision):

———————————-

Mark Briscoe vs. Shelton Benjamin (Round 1, Blue League, Continental Classic, 11/27)

Darby Allin: [NEW] – (L/PF) – 0

Will Ospreay vs. Juice Robinson (Round 1, Gold League, Continental Classic, 11/30)

Will Ospreay: [2ND C2] – (W/PF) – 3 (LY: 3)
Juice Robinson [KOMANDER as of 12/6]: [NEW] – (L/PF) – 0 (LYBF: 3 <JAY WHITE>)*

*Juice Robinson is to be replaced by Komander for the rest of the tournament as of 11/27 due to a broken fibula injury, as reported by Fightful. The LYBF category will no longer be reported in the upcoming weeks.

The Beast Mortos [NEW]: (L/PF) – 0

As the tournament rolls on, the standings of each league will be posted in win-loss-draw format, to keep up with how each participant scored the total points they received in each match. The standings will be changed weekly.

Claudio Castagnoli: 3 Points (1-0-0)

The next round of tournament matches for 12/4 and 12/7 are as follows:

Claudio Castagnoli vs Brody King (Gold League, 12/4)

Shelton Benjamin vs Kyle Fletcher (Blue League, 12/4)

Ricochet vs Komander (Gold League,12/6)

Daniel Garcia vs The Beast Mortos (Blue League, 12/6)

Mark Briscoe vs Kazuchika Okada (Blue League, 12/6)

With the changes to the upcoming tournament schedule and Juice Robinson’s injury, this could change the results of the tournament as a whole, however, the remaining matches should still be feasible in the upcoming weeks.
