Matthew And Nicholas Jackson Reveal Plans Changed Creatively “Four To Five” Times In Six Months During Their Recent AEW Tag Title Run
The saying in wrestling “plans changed” appears to have been the theme for The Young Bucks most recent AEW World Tag Team Championship run.
The Young Bucks and Private Party storyline almost didn’t happen.
The Young Bucks recently joined the Tunnel Talk podcast and discussed their most recent run as AEW Tag Champs. During the interview they revealed that plans changed “four to five different times in the last, like six months,” additionally the teams that the Young Bucks were supposed to drop the belts to also changed multiple times.
“For instance, this last run we just had, we were supposed to drop those titles months and months before we actually dropped them. Creative changed, I would say, four to five different times in the last, like six months. At one point we were going to lose the belts to a certain team, and then a month later, it changed to another team.
I remember Private Party came up to us, actually, and they were, they mentioned about wanting to do a long-term program with us, and we’re like, ‘Well, sorry, man, Tony just gave us the layout of what we’re doing, and that’s not in the cards.’ Something changed. We ended up wrestling them in a match in Seattle. We tore the house down, and as soon as we got backstage, we knew, alright, it’s in Tony’s eyes. He was like ‘I think we have something,’ and Matt and I thought the same exact thing, and we’re like, we gotta pivot, we gotta change our plans again.
That was the fourth time changing plans for those titles to be dropped, and we were happy, though, because we wanted to put those guys over, they deserved the spotlight, and it’s been five years now, so they were ready for a big bush. I’m just glad Matt and I got to give them that last shove before we left.”

Matthew Jackson went on to further discuss the pivot to a program and eventually dropping the World Tag Titles to Private Party, and the reaction that they got with the audience. He then put themselves over for their ability of being able to “get the people on the babyfaces’ side,” and added that they are “probably one of the best at that.”
“I feel like the reaction that they got was so strong. Everyone was saying, ‘God, that felt like an old-school AEW pop,’ like when the Lucha Brothers beat us in the cage. There’s something about when we’re the bad guys, we’re fighting a team, and they come from underneath, and we’re the champs, and then they beat us for the belts. We know how to get the people on the babyfaces’ side. I think that’s one thing I’ll pat ourselves on the shoulder about. We’re probably one of the best at that.”

The Young Bucks won the AEW World Tag Team Titles back in April of 2024 at AEW’s Dynasty PPV when they defeated FTR (Cash Wheeler & Dax Harwood) in a Ladder Match. Their run as AEW World Tag Team Champions lasted 192 days, before losing the belts to Private Party (Zay & Quen) on October 30th, 2024 at AEW’s Fright Night Dynamite.
