UFC On ABC 3: Ortega vs Rodriguez Results – 7/16/22
UFC on ABC 3 is live from the UBS Arena in Long Island. The event is headlined by Brian Ortega vs. Yair Rodriguez white a loaded card to back it. So, let’s get into the results.
Emily Ducote defeats Jessica Penne by Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)
Emily Ducote makes her UFC debut in convincing fashion. Though she couldn’t get the finish, she used lower calf kicks to tear up Jessica’s left leg. Emily had her opponent limping and even hopping on one leg during the fight from the game changing kicks. Emily did a good job at using the hands to lead into the calf kicks, but even some big bombs got through with the fists. Great display of MMA shown for the debuting Ducote and a big win to show for it.
Dustin Stoltzfus defeats Dwight Grant via Unanimous Decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
Dustin gets the decision win, which was very much a standing fight until the end of the last round where Dustin got a big slam and got in some ground and pound until the bell rang. Dustin was on a three fight losing streak coming into this fight and needed a win, now he got it. This is also his first fight in front of UFC fans, having only fought in the empty apex for the pandemic era. Now, Stoltzfus can use this momentum to possibly stack up some more wins for himself.
Dustin Jacoby defeats Da Un Jung via Round-One Knockout (punch)
Walk-off knockout for Dustin Jacoby, he’s unbeaten in nine fights now, snapping the 15 fight no loss streak of Jung. This one didn’t last long, Jung looked good at the start, but it only takes one shot and that’s what happened here. A right hand to the temple gave Jacoby the knockout win. After the fight, Dustin hopes this gets him a bonus and says he wants someone in the top 10. “This is my second UFC run and I’m not getting any younger.” With a win like that, it’ll be hard to deny Jacoby in this division.
Bill Algeo defeats Herbert Burns via Round-Two TKO (ref stoppage)
Bill Algeo got caught in some submission attempts early but survived and ended up getting some nasty ground and pound to end the first round. The second round was much of the same, Herbert got a takedown, but Bill stayed clear of submissions and worked the ground and pound once again. This time, Bill backed off and let Herbert get back to his feet, but Burns could not stand up and the ref called it. Originally, it seemed like Herbert’s cardio got the best of him, but post-fight, UFC medics were checking Herbert’s knee and helping him up, so a possible injury there. Bill Algeo gets the win, and called out Chase Hooper after the fight, says he wants a fight in September-October area before his expected baby comes in November.
Ricky Simon defeats Jack Shore via Round-Two Submission (arm-triangle)
Ricky Simon has handed the 16-0 Jack Shore his first loss. Ricky came in looking to wrestle and it worked out well for him, but it wasn’t easy. Jack Shore continued to get up when taken down throughout round one and half of round two, but a short jab on the feet dropped Jack and Ricky pounced all over him. Ricky tried for the rear naked choke but quickly transitioned into a arm triangle, causing Jack to tap. That’s five in a row for Ricky. After the fight, he calls for a fight with Sean O’Malley.
Punahele Soriano defeats Dalcha Lungiambula via Round-Two Knockout (punches)
Punahele came in on a two fight losing streak, but he’s now back in the win column after a huge right hand bomb that shut out the lights. Both men were swinging heat in round one, but they made it through to the second round, surprisingly. Then, 28 seconds into round 2, the Knockout occurred. Dalcha seemingly had a rib pop out at the end of round one, but it wasn’t even a target as the KO came early. Punahele was very emotional after his win.
Lauren Murphy defeats Meisha Tate via Unanimous Decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
Lauren Murphy spoils the flyweight debut of Meisha Tate. The last time Lauren was in the cage in September of last year, she lost to the champion. Now, she came in right out of the gate on fire. She was in Meisha’s face and pushed the pace the entire time. She picked her apart on the feet and mixed in some takedown attempts. After the fight, Lauren has her eyes on the championship still, and says one defeat won’t keep her away, she wants another opportunity.
Shane Burgos defeats Charles Jourdain via Majority Decision (29-28, 29-28, 28-28)
Shane Burgos narrowly punched his victory ticket in this fight. The first round could’ve went to anyone, while Shane Burgos dominated round two. Jourdain came back in the third and dominated on the feet, almost getting a finish. It all came down to the first round, which the judges saw it Shane’s way. He gets the victory in his home state in a exciting battle. After the fight, Shane says this was the last fight on his deal, but he’s signed a new one and wants a fight around November. Shane’s now on a two fight win streak.
Matt Schnell defeats Su Mudaerji via Round-Two Submission (triangle choke)
Round of the year? Round two very well may be. Su clearly won round one. And looked like he was going to win round two as well. He was freezing Matt with punches and wobbled him multiple times, but Matt got him down and sliced Su’s head wide open with some ground and pound. Su reversed and got on top and tried for some ground and pound of his own, but Matt Schnell locked in a triangle choke and put the lights out for his opponent. After the fight, Schnell says he doesn’t even remember the shots that wobbled him, but he was never dropped. What a war.
Jingliang Li defeats Muslim Salikhov via Round-Two TKO (strikes)
Li coming in off of a loss, but looked great in his return. He was ahead coming out of a lackluster first round, but really put his foot on the gas pedal and was up in Salikhov’s face the entire round until he nailed him with a brutal shot that put him down, and jumped on him for the ground and pound finish. After the fight, Li says he trained so hard to get a win over a former training partner, and he did just that.
Amanda Lemos defeats Michelle Waterson via Round-Two Submission (guillotine)
After a lack luster round one, which seemingly went in favor of Lemos, things got interesting in the second when the fight was taken to the ground. Waterson tried to work from the guard, was caught in a guillotine and tapped out. The ref didn’t see the tap, and Lemos let go of the submission, and Waterson acknowledged that she did indeed tap. Amanda was coming in off of a April loss, but she’s back in the win column. Amanda mentions after the fight that she was disappointed in her last outing and wanted to come in looking better, she did it.
Yair Rodriguez defeats Brian Ortega via Round-One TKO (injury)
Yair Rodriguez and Brian Ortega wasted no time getting after it. Ortega pushed the pace hard right from the start, Yair was landing clean shots but Ortega was walking through it. They go to the ground, Yair tries for a arm-bar, but Ortega pulls his arm out and his shoulder pops out. Fight over. Very anticlimactic ending to the fight. Yair was possibly getting a title fight if he won here, but now it’s unclear after a win like this. Both men say they would like to run it back if possible. Hopefully Ortega gets well soon.
Overall, UFC on Long Island was a fun afternoon of fighting. Despite the tough ending to the main event, we did see some very fun fights such as Burgos vs. Jourdain, Li Jingliang finish and Matt Schnells epic comeback. We will be back with UFC coverage next week as UFC hits London, England!
