WWE Had Considered Putting The Title On Samoa Joe At SummerSlam
As we saw at SummerSlam, AJ Styles was successful in his WWE Championship Title defense over Samoa Joe.
While Styles walked out of the Barclays Center still WWE Champion, apparently there was talk at one point of having Samoa Joe go over AJ and leave SummerSlam as the champ. However, they obviously ultimately decided against that idea and kept the belt on Styles.
On the latest audio update via PWInsider Elite, Mike Johnson discussed the outcome of the WWE Championship match at Summerslam, Johnson said:
“There was consideration for Joe winning the belt by they obviously that’s not the final finish they went with.”
As we saw on SmackDown LIVE this week, the feud between Samoa Joe and AJ Styles continued. Joe interrupted an AJ Styles promo really before it even got started, and quickly locked in the coquina clutch on Styles.
Their feud is expected to continue through Hell in a Cell, where the two will have a rematch for the WWE Championship.
