So this is one of those good news/bad news situations. The good news is, CM Punk is scheduled to defend his self-professed ‘Real World Championship’ against Ricky Starks tonight on AEW Collision.
The bad news is…he’s bringing the muffins.
At least, according to Punk’s Instagram, he is.
Punk recently posted to his Instagram story a historic photo that has since become a meme, in which former White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card whispered to then-President George W. Bush that America was under attack, following the events of September 11, 2001. The photo itself is an important one but, the internet being what it is, we just couldn’t leave it alone.
Countless people have since co-opted the photo and included their own sometimes witty messages. Punk now joins that camp.
In his IG story, Punk shared the story with this message: “Punk is here and he has muffins.”
Now, while the former and/or current AEW Champion could just be letting the world know of his whereabouts and his current favorite breakfast pastry, more likely, it’s a callback to the infamous “Muffin-Gate’ at the AEW All Out 2022 Post-Show Media Scrum. It was during this scrum that Punk, sitting alongside AEW CEO Tony Khan, completely buried (depending on who you speak to) the Elite, including Adam Page, the Young Bucks, Kenny Omega and more. And Colt Cabana. You can never forget Colt Cabana.
The best/worst part is that, while he was berating his co-workers, he was also gleefully shoving a myriad of muffins down his gullet, courtesy of Mindy’s Bakery – a Chicago bakery that probably got more business from that one press conference than from years of marketing.
Muffin-Gate-cum-Brawl-Out happened almost a year ago and while it seems that some fences have been mended, it is still believed that tensions are high between Punk and The Elite.
Perhaps, in an effort to make light of those tensions, Punk has decided to offer up a quick and easy joke regarding his affinity for baked goods. Or maybe he plans on yelling at Ricky Starks after Collision. Either way, Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting and wrestling fans are going to get a lot of it tonight, with both WWE Summerslam and AEW Collision happening simultaneously.
