Imperium’s Intercontinental Champion Gunther will make history this week as he surpasses Honky Tonk Man’s record as WWE’s longest-reigning holder of the belt after retaining it this week against Chad Gable.
The match itself was incredible, yet inappropriately broken up between commercial breaks, delivered picture-in-picture. Chad Gable’s own family were front-row to watch as the match heated up and escalated with near-falls and near tap-outs until a powerbomb from the IC champ put away the Olympian for good.
The Honky Tonk Man’s record was for over fourteen months, ending at the hands of The Ultimate Warrior at Summerslam 1988. This massive acheivement was proudly touted by the company for decades until the Austrian surpassed the legend.
