Internally in WWE, the company are managing expectations for WrestleMania 40 next year.
On a recent edition of WWE SmackDown, The Rock would make his explosive return to the WWE to confront Austin Theory.
In the segment, The Rock would verbally eviscerate Theory, leading a round of “you are an asshole” chants that lasted quite a while, leading to Pat McAfee remarking that the show is only two hours.
With this appearance, fans had renewed hope that The Rock and Roman Reigns will lock up at WrestleMania 40.
The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that WWE are not expecting The Rock to wrestle at WrestleMania 40 and are not operating under the assumption he will be.
After The Rock turned down WrestleMania last year, nobody is going with the idea he’s going to do it this year. The match with Roman Reigns is not scheduled, unlike at this time last year when the match was considered a good shot.

Before his return, the Rock would speak on The Pat McAfee show, where he discussed the rumored plan for him to face Roman Reigns at this years WrestleMania, while he also confirmed he has interest in competing at WrestleMania 40.
