HBO’s Last Week Tonight With John Oliver Blasts WWE Over Relationship With Saudi Arabia
WWE’s current business relationship with The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been a hot topic of discussion as of late after the company came under heavy criticism from multiple members of the US Senate due to the volatile situation currently between the United States and Saudi Arabia following the kidnapping and apparent murder of US Journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
WWE’s relationship and upcoming Crown Jewel event scheduled to be held in Saudi Arabia on November 2nd was discussed last night on HBO’s “Last Week Tonight” with John Oliver.
During the segment Oliver discusses the fact that WWE is in the beginning of a 10-year deal with Saudi Arabia and how it is being used as a propaganda tool. Oliver used examples from The Greatest Royal Rumble to show his point, and showed footage to drive the message home.
Oliver took many shots at WWE and pro wrestling in general during the segment, even referring to WWE as “latently homoerotic”. He also mocked John Cena’s “You Can’t See Me” hand gesture, while saying that WWE “can’t see human rights abuses”.
The description for the segment from “Last Week Tonight” regarding WWE’s relationship with Saudi Arabia reads, “Following the alarming disappearance of a Saudi journalist and political dissident, John Oliver examines America’s uncomfortably comfortable relationship with Saudi Arabia.”
