El Desperado announces leave of absence due to knee surgery

El Desperado will be away from the ring indefinitely.

El Desperado, by means of New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s YouTube channel, announced he will be taking a leave of absence from in-ring action due to surgery on his left medial meniscus. A day prior, Desperado defeated DDT’s Chris Brookes in a no disqualification match at the Japanese promotion’s annual Wrestle Peter Pan event. In the announcement, the Best of The Super Junior 31 winner makes clear that this time away from the ring is in no part due to his match with Chris Brookes.

I wrestled Chris yesterday, and now I have holes in my head, my back, my chest, and my nipples. This has absolutely nothing to do with that. I just want to make it clear, this isn’t about the match with Chris. And it’s not about taking time off because I’m stressed or burned out or anything.

This is not the first indication from Desperado that he would be taking time off as, soon after dropping his IWGP Junior Heavyweight championship on the final night of New Japan’s Soul tour, he made sure to state that he would be taking a break from matches through his X (formerly Twitter) account.

As of this writing, it is unclear when El Desperado will return to in-ring action, but he did communicate that he intends to return healthy, win the IWGP Junior Heavyweight championship, win the 32nd Best of the Super Junior tournament, and, “do more wild and inspiring stuff”.
