WWE Smackdown Results & Review (August 9th, 2024)

On August 9th, 2024 WWE aired the 1,303rd episode of Smackdown live in Tulsa Oklahoma inside BOK Center.

-Kicking off this week’s Smackdown with highlights of SummerSlam.

-Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes asks Tulsa what they want to talk about then says he doesn’t want to delve into the past. He says all eyes on what happens next with the Undisputed WWE Title then says he wants to talk about who he defends his title against at Bash At Berlin.

-Solo Sikoa’s music hits and he makes his way out alongside Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa. Sikoa says he doesn’t care what Rhodes wants to talk about or what fans want to hear then says he wants to talk about SummerSlam. He says he & Rhodes both know that he would’ve dethroned Rhodes has Roman Reigns not gotten involved in the match then demands Rhodes give him another title shot.

-Rhodes says since Sikoa wants to talk about SummerSlam, he should discuss Jacob Fatu getting injured, Reigns wanting his retribution and coming up short. He says Sikoa has no claim to a rematch.

-The Bloodline hop up on the apron but Kevin Owens slides into the ring with 2 chairs in hand. He hands one over to Rhodes & The Bloodline backs down. Sikoa says he’ll deal with Rhodes later after he finds Reigns & Rhodes tells him that he’ll be waiting.

-Rhodes’ music begins playing as The Bloodline heads to the back. Owens exits the ring but Rhodes calls for his music to be stopped and calls Owens back into the ring. Rhodes says he talked about who he wanted to defend his title against at Bash At Berlin then says he wants to face Owens. Owens says as much as he appreciates it, he doesn’t deserve a title match. He says title matches need to be earned and says he hasn’t earned the shot. He tells Rhodes that he’s not the guy.

-Rhodes says he had a feeling Owens wouldn’t accept a title shot but says Owens has been in the trenches with him and is still The Prizefighter in the prime of his career. Rhodes says he’s getting ready to talk to Nick Aldis to get Owens a title shot then says he’s pretty sure Aldis will understand where he’s coming from. He says Owens will face him at Bash At Berlin then heads to the back as Owens follows him up the ramp.

WWE Tag Team Titles #1 Contenders Qualifying Match
A Town Down Under (Austin Theory & Grayson Waller) vs. Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins & Montez Ford)

After the break Austin Theory lands a missile dropkick on Angelo Dawkins and tags in Grayson Waller.

Theory gets Dawkins up on his shoulders as Waller ascends up the ropes but Dawkins escapes and takes down A Town Down Under. Ford tags in, and hits a crossbody to Waller off the top rope.

He connects with a clothesline on Waller and a flapjack on Theory then hits one to Waller.

Ford ascends to the top rope and flies but Waller moves out of the way and sends him crashing into the corner.

Theory tags in and lands a double rolling elbow on Ford with Waller but Ford connects with a back elbow on him.

Waller pulls Ford out of the ring but Ford lands a superkick on him and Dawkins sends him crashing over the barricade near the timekeeper’s area with a pounce.

Dawkins tags in and gets Theory in an electric chair position as Ford ascends to the top rope.

Street Profits hits a Japanese Ocean Cyclone suplex combination for the win.

Winners & Gets Into The WWE Tag Team Titles #1 Contenders Match: Street Profits

-We then head backstage and see Cody Rhodes & Kevin Owens continuing their argument from earlier tonight as Nick Aldis listens. Aldis reveals he was going to give an Undisputed WWE Title match to Roman Reigns & Owens becomes frustrated. He questions why Reigns immediately gets a title shot before Aldis grants Owens an Undisputed WWE Title match at Bash In Berlin.

After the break we head backstage to a frustrated Tiffany Stratton organizing a Women’s Title celebration for Nia Jax. She becomes frustrated with the person she’s coordinating with and dismisses them before Pretty Deadly approaches her and asks her to organize a celebration for them when they become WWE Tag Team Champions. Stratton then runs into Chelsea Green & Piper Niven and they exchange shots with one another.

Women’s Tag Team Champion Alba Fyre vs. Jade Cargill

Jade Cargill rocks Alba Fyre with a forearm but Fyre catches her with a superkick and goes for a pin.

Cargill kicks out and Fyre rains down right hands on her.

She wears Cargill down with a submission but Cargill rakes down Fyre and lands a superkick on her.

She follows it up with Jaded for the win.

Winner: Jade Cargill

-After the match Blair Davenport blindsides Cargill as The Unholy Union beat down Bianca BelAir. Naomi’s music hits and she runs down to the ring to even the odds.

-After the break United States Champion LA Knight says he wants to talk to fans then says SummerSlam has come and gone. He says he told fans he would become United States Champion and he’s done just that. He says that his United States Title makes him a marked man but he’s been a marked man since he walked into Smackdown. He says he’s knocked down everyone that’s stepped up to him then says he can’t stop being United States Champion with everyone saying his name.

-Santos Escobar’s music hits and he makes his way down alongside the rest of Legado Del Fantasma. Escobar congratulates Knight on becoming United States Champion then says it’s not everyday that a guy like Knight gets a taste of gold. He says that he doesn’t buy Knight as a champion because it’s not a good fit then says that he’s the one that truly deserves to be United States Champion with everyone saying his name.

-Knight says Escobar deserves everything bad that’s coming to him then says it’s his own game with everybody saying his name.

Non Title United States Title #1 Contenders Match
Speed Champion Andrade vs Santos Escobar

Santos Escobar hits a reverse hurricanrana to Andrade off the top rope then looks to land a Meteora on Andrade in the corner.

Andrade sees him coming and moves out of the way then connects with a dropkick and ascends to the top rope.

He looks to land a moonsault but Escobar rolls out of the way and Andrade immediately transitions into a standing moonsault.

Carmelo Hayes hops up on the apron but Andrade clocks him and hits a back elbow to Escobar.

He goes for a pin but Escobar kicks out.

Andrade charges at Escobar in the corner but Hayes pulls Escobar out of the way from the outside and the referee doesn’t see.

Escobar takes advantage and rolls up Andrade for the win.

Winner & #1 Contender To The United States Title: Santos Escobar

WWE Tag Team Titles #1 Contenders Qualifying Match
Pretty Deadly (Kit Wilson & Elon Prince) vs. DIY (Tommaso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano)

DIY double team on Elton Prince then Johnny Gargano sets up for a spear through the middle rope but Prince catches him with a knee to his midsection.

Ciampa tags in but Prince wears him down and double teams on him with Kit Wilson.

Wilson rocks Gargano with a forearm but Gargano looks to connect with one of his own.

Prince pushes Wilson out of the way and takes the move and Wilson then levels him.

Prince tags in and Pretty Deadly looks to land Spilled Milk on Ciampa but Gargano catches Prince with a spear through the middle rope, and Ciampa rocks Wilson with a jumping knee.

Gargano tags in and DIY connect with Shatter Machine on Prince before they follow it up with Meeting In The Middle for the win.

Winners & Gets Into The WWE Tag Team Titles #1 Contenders Match: DIY

-We then head backstage to the Gorilla Position where Tama Tonga & Tanga Loa inform Solo Sikoa that they’ve been unable to locate Roman Reigns.

-Solo Sikoa demands that Tulsa acknowledge him then says in case Roman Reigns hasn’t noticed, he’s the Tribal Chief now. He says if Reigns wants his former position back then he can come and get it.

-Reigns’ music hits and he makes his way out. Tonga looks to meet him on the ramp but Reigns levels him and sends Loa crashing into the ring steps. He hits both Loa & Tonga with the ring steps then stares down Sikoa as Sikoa takes off his jacket. Reigns gets inside the ring then fires off right hands on Sikoa. He levels him with a Superman Punch then looks to follow it up with a spear. Tonga & Loa pull Sikoa out of the ring before Reigns can hit it but Reigns spots Sikoa’s lei and picks it up. Tonga & Loa then blindside Reigns and Tonga hands Sikoa his lei.

-Tonga & Loa beat down Reigns, but Reigns hits them with a pair of Superman Punches. He connects with a spear on Loa then hits a 2nd one on Tonga on the outside through the barricade near the timekeeper’s area. He grabs a chair then repeatedly hits Loa with it across his spine. Sikoa places his lei across his chest as Reigns continues hitting Loa with the chair. Fans cheer for Reigns to close out Smackdown.
