When Davey Boy Smith Jr won the All Japan Pro-Wrestling Triple Crown Championship from Yuma Aoyagi back on November 4th, he knew that a target would be etched on his back immediately. Jun Saito, the co-holder of the AJPW World Tag Team Titles, indicated today to Tokyo Sports that he has placed Davey Boy Smith Jr in his crosshairs and has his sights on getting a Triple Crown Championship opportunity.
Jun Saito is well aware to get that opportunity, he needs to earn it by either winning one of the AJPW singles tournaments.
From Jun Saito:
“My brother (Rei) and I haven’t won the Champion’s Carnival, and we haven’t won the Royal Road Tournament either. If this happens, it will be a single match. If I win, I would like to aim for the triple crown belt.”
Jun Saito had nothing but praise for the current Triple Champion Davey Boy Smith Jr. and stated he hopes he is the current titleholder if he gets another chance at AJPW’s top prize:
“He is strong. He can do anything, but he is also big, fast, and strong. I don’t think he has many flaws as a heavyweight wrestler. I’d like to fight him while he has it.“
Jun Saito challenged only once for the Triple Crown Championship which was back on February 20. Saito, who was a last minute replacement for his injured brother Rei, fell in defeat against then champion Katsuhiko Nakajima.
It’s a safe bet that Jun Saito, who has dominated the AJPW tag team scene with his brother Rei, will get another shot at the Triple Crown Championship in the near future. Saito has being rising as a singles threat and winning the prestigious AJPW title would cement his status one of the all time greats in the famed promotion.
