Exclusive: Zak Bevis Speaks On The Rock Being “Hollywood”
British wrestler Zak Bevis, star of BBC documentary series ‘Step into the Ring’ has commented on how true to life the 2019 movie ‘Fighting with my Family’ was – and how Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson – who both appeared in and acted as Executive Producer for the film – was the only real Hollywood addition to the story.
Bevis, 30, said: “The ‘Hollywood’ was the Rock. He was the Hollywood sprinkle that they added into the movie. The only connection the Rock had is he found our documentary, he watched it, he was empowered by it.”
The Bevis family are often compared to other famous wrestling dynasties like the Hart, Von Erich, Anoa’i or Rhodes clans. Zak’s wrestling family includes dad Ricky, mum Saraya, half-brother Roy and sister Paige.
Bevis, 30, added: “It reminded (The Rock) of his family and he wanted to move forward and put our message out there – that we’re a family unit, and as long as you have family, anything is possible.”
The family owns and runs Norwich-based promotion WAW, and has been the subject of several documentaries – the latest of which, ‘Step into the Ring’ is available on BBC iPlayer in the UK now.
Speaking at the Sundance Film Festival in 2019, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson said: “I think the non-wrestling fans, non-WWE fans, that other audience, I think that they’re going to resonate with ‘Fighting with my Family’ because there are a few elements in it that are universal.
“Of course love, family, support, perseverance, and also something I think that is very important that young men and more importantly young women can lean into is this ideology that if you don’t fit into a box, it doesn’t mean you’re not going to make it.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter, The Rock’s production company Seven Bucks shot ‘Fighting with my Family’ on an $11 million budget, and sold the movie to MGM in for $17 million.
