NJPW G1 Climax 30 – Night 9 Preview
By the end of night 9 we will be officially half way through Block action in G1 Climax 30 and what a ride it has been already. For tonight’s trip we head to Takamatsu on the southern island of Shikoku. There’s some absolute bangers tonight so strap in…
Yuya Uemura v Gabriel Kidd
Kidd, alongside Yota Tsuji, almost stole the show on night 8 in a classic Young Lions draw. The chemistry between all three Young Lions on this tour has only grown so expect a belter here. Uemarua isn’t in must win territory yet to stay in contention for our unofficial C Block competition but a loss would be big one.
Shingo Takagi v Yujiro Takahashi
Well, let’s be honest, this is 2 points for Shingo right? I keep predicting Yujiro will win matches because that would be unpredictable thus I’m always wrong so it ends up both predictable and unpredictable… I think. Look, it’s pretty obvious Yujiro is probably going 0-9 at this stage and Shingo needs 2 points to stay in contention. As for the match itself? It’ll be perfectly fine.
Jeff Cobb v Jay White
Now this is going to be fun. Both Cobb and White have been impressive since their return to Japan. This is the kind of show where the tight pack at the front can begin to stretch out so one would expect King Switch to pick up 2 points. But the G1 is anything other than predictable. What we will get is a fab match though between two ROH veterens.
Kazuchika Okada v Minoru Suzuki
Okada and Suzuki have been beating the hell out of each for a while. Hell, Okada was the target of Suzuki upon Suzuki-gun’s return at New Year’s Dash back in 2017. Since then they have encountered each other several times including legendary battles like the Draw in the Downpour or main eventing NJPW’s hugely successful first ever UK solo show at Royal Quest. Every time the Rainmaker faces the King it’s a barnburner and this will be the same.
Tomohiro Ishii v Taichi
This might sound strange but this is the match I’m most looking forward to. The Stone Pitbull always brings the best out of Taichi. Arguably he’s been the Holy Emperor’s greatest rival. In an era when Taichi was thought of as just an unlikable pain in the arse as opposed to a potential major player we saw Ishii getting absolute bangers out of him. Now we’ve started to see Taichi step up regularly, including at this G1, expectations are now high. I doubt this match will disappoint. Low key match of the G1 contender right here.
Kota Ibushi v Will Ospreay
Again, we get a rematch from a classic rivalry. These 2 opened up Wrestle Kingdom 13 with an absolutely brutal war over the NEVER Openweight Championship which Ospreay won which kickstarted his awesome 2019 run. Unfortunately for the Golden Star he got a concussion that day and missed some time off the road. Still, this match was huge. It established Ospreay as potential heavyweight contender. Now Ospreay is an established heavweight and Ibushi is established at the top of the card this should be a bit special. This will be both an aerial spectacle and a brutal striking contest. Also, these are both in the leading pack at 6 points so this is a top of the table clash. Expect action.
