Jon Jones Vs Israel Adesanya, The Fight We Want But Probably Won’t Get
Yeah…. yeah, yeah that’s the fight to make, 100%. I think that a fight between those two is massive. It doesn’t depend on what I want, it depends on what they want to do
That was UFC president Dana White speaking recently when asked about a potential fight between P4P king Jon “Bones” Jones and rising star Israel “The Last Stylebender” Adesanya.
Unless you’ve been under a rock or care nothing about the sport of MMA you would know that social media has all the sudden become the end all, be all to fight making in the UFC. Whether they actually materialize is a whole other story but it seemed to work recently for the likes of Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier. Conor offered a charity fight to Poirier after he pulled out of the fight against Tony Ferguson at UFC 254 due to financial compensation. This seemingly forced the hand of Dana White to open up the company’s wallet to make sure the fight takes place under the UFC banner, hopefully in 2020. Now, it’s Jones and Adesanya’s turn.
In a very funny and at times down right nasty war or words over the last few weeks the two men are taking turns once a night to throw verbal haymakers at each other. Instead of going through every single tweet, here are some highlights from each man
While it’s all fun and games for the viewing public, it’s not doing anything but creating hype for a let down. You have Adesanya attacking Jones from every angle about his past legal problems, mother and failed drug tests; while Jones talks about recent allegations of Israel using steroids in his Costa fight and repeatedly saying Adesanya is just obsessed with him. I believe it’s Israel winning the war of words there are two tweets from Jones that interest me the most
With days of funny tweets and memes, these caught me as the most interesting because of logic and how Israel didn’t really give a legitimate answer.
Starting with Jones asking why he hasn’t signed the contract and Israel firing back with just more insults, it makes me wonder if this is just a case of “keyboard warriors”. Adesanya is obviously a force in the ring, he’s a top draw at the moment but why not end this “fight” with one simple picture, a contract with his name attached? A fight of this magnitude has to at least have Dana throwing out feelers to both men about it, maybe even a contract offer at catch weight? UFC would be foolish to not even attempt trying to get these men together for what would be the biggest fight, maybe ever to take place in 2021.
Jones talking about his undefeated record tweet is the biggest reason, for me, That this fight doesn’t happen. Jon Jones… P4P kingpin, over 7 million dollars in career earnings, only one career lose which was by DQ, doesn’t need Israel Adesanya. If Jones follows through and moves to Heavyweight, he has potential two big money fights with Miocic or possibly Lesnar. Does Jones really want to put his legacy on the line to give the rising star a shot to essentially take away what he’s earned over the years?
Israel Adesanya…. Undisputed Middleweight champion, undefeated, almost 3 million in career earnings and until last year was relatively out of the spotlight until challenging UFC legend Anderson Silva. Adesanya has cleared out the middleweight division but has never faced anyone in Jon Jones league. If he were to step in the octagon and lose to Jones, all this momentum gained over the last year would be sent to a screaming halt. That cloak of invincibility would be gone and it’s yet to be seen how he would handle adversity after a lose. All that on top of the fact there are huge names in neighboring divisions some of which also have perfect or 1 lose records which would draw just as much intrigue, Usman and Nurmagomedov.
All that being said would I love to be proven wrong and see this fight happen? Absolutely. I just think the risk outweighs the reward for both fighters and I don’t believe either one of them are willing to lose what they’ve got. If this fight does end up coming about I would take a guess it wouldn’t be until Dana White and Company could pack a house with Live fans and who knows when that will even be a possibility. You can tune in nightly on twitter @stylebender and @JonnyBones to catch the banter back and forth between the two or just catch up on what’s already been said.
Again…. Dana White, UFC, Israel Adesanya, Jon Jones, fight gods, please prove me wrong and actually make this dream fight come true.
