APPG Wrestling Gets Response From Parliament Regarding British Wrestling Shows
On Wednesday the 16th APPG Wrestling Co-Chair Alex Davies launched an inquiry into Professional Wrestling in Great Britain, following the speaking out movement.
As part of the inquiry Alex Davies penned a letter on why they need to investigate and evaluate British Wrestling as an entertainment/sport industry. As well as making an effort to look at what improvements could be made with regards to models of best practice for both running shows and code of conducts to protect performers and promoters.
Two of the major issues covered in the letter are the affects of the #SpeakingOutMovement as well as the affect Covid 19 is currently having on the British Wrestling Industry. The APPG are also interested in creating a governing body for the industry to create regulatory frame work for promotions to operate within.
The APPG want to offer more support to the British Wrestling Industry, which currently runs without any significant high level support.
On the 27th October, Alex Davies received a response from Oliver Dowden Secretary of state for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. In the response he explains that Wrestling Promotions should be adhering to the Performance Arts Guidance, for when it comes to performing shows currently. He would also training, likening it to grass root sports, and should be following the leadership of the Martial Arts Governing body. Most importantly he would also cover #speakingout by briefly touching on misogyny in the industry by working on arranging a meeting to see what more can be done to support the industry.
Alex Davies Co-Chair for APPG wrestling has stated that she will continue to push for further clarity.
Finally the APPG would recommend wrestling promoters to contact local health officials in advance of any events.
What do you make of the response? Do you still feel more needs to be done to help British Wrestling bounce back following Covid? Should the government step in more to ensure we don’t have another incident such as the speaking out movement?
