Exclusive: Independent Wrestler Devon Storm (aka Crowbar) Gives His Opinion On Current Wrestling And How It Helps His Style
Independent wrestler Devon Storm, sometimes going by his WCW name Crowbar, continues to run the independent circuits. While perfecting his own craft Storm, real name Christopher Ford, talked about keeping up with today’s wrestling product and how it helps him continue to have success in the ring
If you still watch the product today, out the big two AEW or WWE/NXT, which do you prefer and why?
I record every show and usually watch when I do cardio. While it’s not fashionable, some even say taboo for a pro wrestler to say, I’m at the point where I don’t care what people think of me anymore so I proudly profess, I’m a HUGE FAN of pro wrestling. So watching wrestling when I do cardio really helps the time fly when I’m on cardio equipment. I watch the shows, I have a note pad, take notes, jot ideas etc…or sometimes just watch and enjoy. I record everything but I tend to watch AEW, ROH and NXT along with early to Mid 90’s WCW and WWF. That may sound like an odd combination but I watch ROH, AEW and NXT because I pride myself on being proficient in today’s maneuvers and familiar with the current styles. You can complain about the change in style – or you can change with it. Success comes with doing the latter.
Chris continued to talk about how he applies what he learns to his own style, helping him to evolve and keep up with the new generation
I do this, so that when I wrestle younger guys, the younger guys are not required to modify their style, so that THEIR fans still get to see the maneuvers that they are accustomed to them doing. So that they don’t have to slow down on my account. Traditionally, in wrestling, younger guys would “tone down” their routine to accommodate a veteran performer. I’m proud of the fact that I’m able to hang with these guys, I know how to take their maneuvers and deliver to the fans a match that they will enjoy. I always ask local promoter or any of the wrestlers for that matter, I always request to wrestle with the younger guys who I say like to “GO”. When I am called for a booking, my first question is “who am I working with”, even before the dollar amount, I’ll ask for video links so that I can check them out id I’m not familiar with them. My wrestling friends think I’m nuts. At this point in my life If I’m going to go out and wrestle, I want to have a good time and have a good match. I usually ask for 12-15 minutes or more and the promoter always looks at me strangely and says “Really?”. You can imagine his face when I ask if he has a spare table lying around and if he wouldn’t mind if I went through it
Again, it all comes down to (at the risk of being repetitive) I’m a HUGE FAN of wrestling. I feel very blessed and privileged that I am still able to perform at the level that I am able to. I get personal enjoyment out of putting in the time and effort and delivering a good match.
