Andrew Yang And SAG-AFTRA President Respond To Potential Unionization Of Pro Wrestlers
Professional wrestlers unionizing has been the talk of the internet over the last couple of weeks. From the moment Paige mentioned she had spoken to a lawyer about unionization, to Zelina Vega tweeting her support of it on the evening of her release, fans have watched the talk get louder and louder.
Vince McMahon has been long against the idea for decades, especially because of what the WWE gets away with thanks to them not being unionized. As is often reported in these stories, WWE classifiers their talent as indepdent contractors, even if they are locked into situations that no union would recognize as independent contracting.
Jon Alba of Spectrum Sports recently reached out to SAG-AFTRA president Gabrielle Carteris for her comment on the ongoing matter, especially after tweeting out her support for Vega after her release was announced. She revealed they will be reaching out to pro wrestlers to help them with their employment rights.
“Wrestling is as much about media as it is sports, and we are going to directly engage with members of this profession to help find ways for them to protect themselves.” “As more people reinvest in unions, as as more working people are harassed by employers who don’t want to protect them, SAG-AFTRA is committed to doing what we can to help professional wrestlers secure the protections they deserve.”
Of course, this response also attracted the attention of Andrew Yang who has openly stated he wants to see Vince’s practices investigated and may get the opportunity sooner than later.
