WWE Talent Concerned Top Talent Won’t Support Unionization
WWE is in a difficult situation at the moment regarding the way they treat their talent. After the release of Zelina Vega and her tweet about supporting unionization only further served to remind fans WWE signs and treats their talent as “independent contractors.” Gabrielle Carteris, president of the Screen Actors Guild has said she would like to step in and help professional wrestlers in regards to unionizing, not to mention the continued reminder that former Presidential candidate Andrew Yang is paying attention and may be breathing down their collective neck if he is placed in a position of power probably isn’t helping their situation.
While firing someone for supporting or attempting to organize a union is illegal, WWE cited “breach of contract” as the official on the record reason Vega was fired but Wrestling News has reported some in the company considered her firing as a “clear message” and may have some reconsidering their talk of unionizing.
There are others in the company that support unionization but they saw what happened with Vega and realize that a message was sent when she was fired.
The report goes on to say that there is “some optimism” in the locker room thanks to the interest shown by SAG-AFTRA and Andrew Yang, but they also worry that the talent making seven figures and more won’t be willing to join their cause.
The worry is that although some will have AEW interest, AEW can’t sign anyone as they have managed to fill out their roster.
