Eric Bischoff Talks About What Convinced Him To Take Executive Director Role For SmackDown

For a while last year, fans were shocked when WWE announced that both Raw and Smackdown would have an Executive Director in charge of the creative direction of each show. Paul Heyman was announced as the Executive Director of Raw and Eric Bischoff was announced for SmackDown.

The move was short lived as Bischoff was removed from the role after only four months after starting his position in June of last year. Bruce Prichard replaced Bischoff and eventually replaced Heyman as well. Bischoff recently spoke with Digital Spy where he talked about taking the position and if he had any regrets about it. While he had no regrets, he offered more insight as to why he took the position, saying it had to do with the chance to work with both Heyman and Prichard.

“I was excited about working with my friend Bruce Prichard and I was looking forward to working with Paul Heyman. Paul Heyman and I have known each other and worked in the same company off and on since 1987. So I’m very familiar with Paul. But when the opportunity came for me go to SmackDown, both Paul and I had reached a stage in our lives where the potential of working together, at least in my mind, provided a much bigger opportunity than it might have 10, or 15, or 20 years earlier, because we were two different people. I think Paul has matured and evolved much like I have, it just comes with age.”

Bischoff didn’t get much of a chance to leave an imprint on the blue brand, but it was definitely interesting to see how the key players in some of WWE’s competitors through the Attitude Era had a chance to shape current WWE programming.
