Cary Silkin purchased Ring of Honor in 2004 after a scandal removed previous owners RF Video. Doug Gentry purchased the majority ownership from disgraced partner Rob Feinstein, eventually selling it to Silkin in 2004. Under Silkin’s run, the company managed to expand in major ways, including international tours and partnerships with all-women’s company SHIMMER.
Silkin eventually sold the company to current owners Sinclair Broadcast Group in 2011, but Silkin revealed that in 2010, he had an interesting offer on the table.
Talking on the ROH Strong podcast, he revealed that Jerry Jarrett had a small interest in buying the company in 2007, but in 2010 former ROH Champion CM Punk allegedly texted Silkin and inquired about buying the company. Of course, Punk was still under contract with the WWE at the time and it’s unknown how serious Punk was about making the purchase, but Silkin talked about it on the podcast.
“I get a text message in like 2010. CM Punk texts me out of nowhere and is like, ‘What would you want to sell Ring of Honor?’ I’ve hustled tickets on the street and have had a somewhat successful business. I don’t think text messaging is the way to approach sales of companies. That first text message might be, ‘I’d like to talk to you about something.’ Those were my only two real offers…they weren’t real. Those were the only two rinky-dink offers I’ve ever had.”
Ring of Honor clearly didn’t find its way to being owned by CM Punk, but he always seems to have a fond place in his heart for the company. Punk even referenced the company in his famous “Pipebomb” promo in June of 2011. You can revisit that moment below.
