Mike Knox Didn’t See The Hype In CM Punk Until The First Time They Wrestled

When WWE decided to bring back ECW, one of the the things they did to change the image of the brand to fit what they wanted was mix in new talent with the established ECW stars from the company’s initial run they brought in.

Two of those stars were CM Punk and Mike Knox. Punk eventually broke from the shell of ECW to become one of the company’s top stars while Knox never really made it out of first gear. Punk’s unparalleled microphone skills were equal to his in-ring skills, one of the reasons he was often called Best in the World. At the time though, fellow rookie (to the company) Knox didn’t quite see it.

Knox spoke with the UnSKripted podcast about Punk and their beginning in the ECW project back in 2006, revealing how much he enjoyed working with Punk and yet up until he actually wrestled Punk, he didn’t understand what the hype was about The Second City Saint.

“I remember the first time that we wrestled. I missed like two or three planes and it was just one of those nightmare days. I thought I was never going to get there. I was changing in the car as they were driving me to the arena because the music was on and he was already out in the ring. I had to jump out of the car and run. We ran to the ring and did everything out there. You know what I mean?

The lost art (calling it in the ring). Everything single thing, including the finish. When I was in Deep South, I was kind of like, I saw him on tape and I was just like, “I don’t get it.” What’s the big deal. I don’t think he’s that good. I don’t understand why everybody’s talking about him. Then I went out there and we did our first match. I have been a fan of his ever since.”

Sometimes seeing is believing, and Mike Knox is definitely a believer now. You can watch the interview below.
