Why AEW Stopped Advertising Thunder Rosa v. Britt Baker For New Year’s Smash
All Elite Wrestling has been building up an intense program involving former NWA Women’s Champion Thunder Rosa and Britt Baker. It was scheduled to culminate at New Year’s Smash, but when the card for night two was announced the match was nowhere to be found.
It turns out the match wasn’t announced on the card for safety reasons, and it was due to COVID-19 concerns. Dave Meltzer reported on the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter that Thunder Rosa has come into contact with a person who tested positive for COVID-19, so for safety concerns, she did not appear on Dynamite and that would have also prevented her from appearing on this Wednesday’s show as it was taped the following day.
The match has now been postponed, replaced by Serena Deeb vs. Tay Conti for the NWA Women’s Championship.
Also off the 1/13 show was the Britt Baker vs. Thunder Rosa match. Rosa was in contact with someone who was COVID positive so was held off the tapings this week but the match will take place at some point. The official word is that they decided to add the NWA women’s title match to the show since it hadn’t been defended. In its place the decision was made to debut Baker’s Waiting Room segment as well as add Serena Deeb vs. Tay Conti (with the Dark Order in their corner) for the NWA women’s title.
There’s no time table on when the match will happen, but it’s certain the match is still in the cards. Thoughts go to Thunder Rosa in the hopes she is healthy.
