UFC promoted UFC 274 from the Footprint Center in Phoenix on Saturday night as it promised to be a happening. The reception of the night’s event, headlined with by a contest between Justin Gaethje and Charles Oliveira, were mixed, but without further adieu, the results are as followed:
Journey Newson defeats Fernie Garcia via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
Journey Newson came into this fight with a very kick heavy approach. His stamina held up for each round as he constantly pushed forward throughout the fight. Journey Newson picks up his first UFC victory after a two year layoff in a impressive showing.
Lupita Godinez defeats Ariane Carnelossi via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-26, 30-26)
Lupita was on point tonight and produced a complete shut out. aided by her wrestling prowess, she dominated every round and looked flawless doing so. Now sitting at two wins in a row with a dominant performance like this, Lupita Godinez is a emerging contender in the strawweight division.
C.J. Vergara defeats Kleydson Rodrigues via split decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
C.J. Vergara picks up his first UFC victory in a very close encounter. Tight first and third rounds for both fighters kept Rodrigues in the bout, but the second round and a high volume of pressure seemingly led to C.J.’s triumph.
Tracy Cortez defeats Melissa Gatto via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
A wrestling heavy back and forth affair saw the hometown fighter Tracy Cortez picks up the win to make it ten in a row to remain undefeated in the UFC. Tracy could possibly become a ranked fighter next week.
Andre Fialho defeats Cameron VanCamp via first-round knockout (punch)
Andre Fialho picks up a big first round knockout win after just a three week turn around. He faced some early adversity from VanCamp but got the job done in one. This is Andre’s 12th first round stoppage in his career and tops it off by calling for a fight in Singapore at UFC 275.
Blagoy Ivanov defeats Marcos Rogerio De Lima via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
Blagov Ivanov picks up a win after a seesaw brawl that saw both men’s gas tanks drained by the end. This is Ivanov’s return after a nearly two year layoff and puts an end to his opponents two-fight win streak, picking up his first victory since 2019.
Brandon Royval defeats Matt Schnell via first-round submission (guillotine choke)
Brandon Royval faced some early adversity after being dropped, but when Matt charged for a finish, they scrambled ontp the floor before Brandon snatched the neck and got the finish. Two wins in a row for Royval after a short four-month turn around.
Macy Chiasson defeats Norma Dumont via split decision (30-27 29-28 -30-27)
Macy Chiasson is back in the win column after a December loss. She puts an end to Norma’s three-fight win streak following a physical grappling match.
Francisco Trinaldo defeats Danny Roberts via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-26, 30-27)
Francisco Trinaldo picks up his second win in a row after his last fight in October. He had Danny rocked and on wobbly legs in both rounds two and three but didn’t quite do enough to get a finish. Yet, he still walks away with another victory under his belt.
Randy Brown defeats Khaos Williams via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28)
Randy Brown picks up a victory after a hard-fought battle in which UFC promoted as the night’s “must see matchup.” Brown struggled early after being dropped in the first and third, but ultimately his constant pressure and quick jab helped him pick up the win. This fight was moved up to open the main card after Cerrone vs. Lauzon was cancelled due to Donald Cerrone’s illness.
Ovince Saint Preux defeats Shogun Rua via split decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27)
OSP picks up a split decision in a less than exciting matchup. OSP gets back into the win column after two back to back TKO/KO losses and is now 2-0 against Shogun Rua.
Michael Chandler defeats Tony Ferguson via round-two Knockout (head kick)
Michael Chandler stuns the world after a nasty head kick to knockout Tony Ferguson. Riding a two-fight loss streak via both men in the main event, Chandler is back in the win column and uses his time on the mic afterwards to call both main-eventers out for rematches and calls out Connor McGregor for a fight at 170lbs. The immediate online and in-show reaction was that Michael Chandler secured the best head kick KO of all-time. Perhaps, it’s almost hyperbolic and an in-the-moment overreaction, perhaps it isn’t. Carla Esparza defeats Rose Namajunas via split decision (28-27, 49-46, 48-47)
Carla Esparza is now 2-0 against Rose and regains the Strawweight Championship in what you could possibly say was the worst championship fight of all-time. Five rounds of absolutely nothing and the least amount of strikes in a fight. What a disappointment.
Charles Oliveira defeats Justin Gaethje via first-round submission (guillotine choke)
Oliveira wins in one round but what an exciting round it was. Justin drops Charles twice, Charles wobbles Justin, pure fun. But, now the reality sets in that the drama of this week comes full circle. Charles Oliveira missed weight and had to vacate the Lightweight Championship. Therefore, Charles does not walk away as champion. Charles Oliveira is officially the number one contender for the Lightweight Title.
